San Francisco, with its long history of tragedy, transients and violence amidst the riches and natural beauty, is brimming with haunted places. In fact, several of San Francisco's hotels are reputed to be haunted. What could be scarier than staying in and walking through the halls of a hotel haunted by past guests? Here are three supposedly haunted hotels in San Francisco that may give you a fright through the night:

San Remo Hotel

Built about 100 years ago by Bank of America founder A.P. Giannini, The San Remo Hotel is an old-school budget hotel housed in a three-story Italianate Victorian building in North Beach. It's not stated on their history page but the San Remo Hotel reportedly was once a brothel run by a madame, a madame who now haunts the place by knocking on doors. Room 33 is her favorite. There are also reports of a ghost of a little girl roaming the hallways and trying to get into room 42. Rooms in the hotels don't have phones or TVs, which mean that you may have nothing to do except wonder what that noise was. Historic photos and Victorian heirloom furniture add to the haunted feeling. Another bonus for those who want to increase their fright factor: there's no private baths so you must go down to the shared baths down the hall.

Queen Anne Hotel

The Queen Anne is a lovely pink Victorian boutique hotel in pleasant Pacific Heights. "The important to budget travel is to plan ahead. When it occurs to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new destinations we have never been before, the actuality of expense and budgeting is often in the back of our heads. Planning and expending our travel budget properly is a priority for most families. Lowering expending and prices, while still experiencing your vacation to its fullest, is the key to confirmed achievements and fiscal obligation. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thought regarding protecting money while touring is simple: Even if your personal finances is really small, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also keeping in mind that while traveling, regardless of whether on a resources or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a large vacation or travel charge!..". It wasn't always a hotel. The building first opened as a boarding school for girls in 1890 by Senator James G. Fair. His mistress, Miss Mary Lake, became the headmistresses. She loved teaching her upper-class girls all that they needed to know at the time, mainly etiquette and social skills. Much to her displeasure, the school was closed and sold a few years later. Miss Mary Lake was crushed at the closure. Unable to let go of her beloved boarding school, her spirit is said to haunt the hotel, specifically room 410 where she lived. Apparently, she loves playing tricks on guests by unpacking their luggage and even tucking them into bed.

Hotel Union Square

The Hotel Union Square is now a spiffy, modern hotel with flair, as one would expect from a property part of San Francisco's Personality Hotels. Besides its design flair, location and personalized service, some guests are attracted to the hotel's reports of hauntings. A female ghost is reported to haunt room 207. Some suspect that the ghost is controversial playwright Lillian Hellman (1905 - 1984), who conducted her long relationship with fellow writer Dashiell Hammett at the hotel when they visited.

For even more hauntings, check out SmarterTravel's world's creepiest places. Their picks include a suicide forest near Mount Fiji in Japan, a voodoo market in Lome, Togo and a swamp near New Orleans, Louisiana where hundreds died after being swept away in a hurricane.
