Fenway Park

Fenway Park is an absolutemust visit on a trip to Boston, and this weekend was no exception. No, the Phils werent in town (either were the Sox, for that matter), but Dave Matthews Band was. Brian and I scored tickets last minute DMB tickets through Ebay just days before Fridays concert. Im not necessarily a fan, but a live DMB show has yet to disappoint me.

We took a short taxi ride to the ballpark around 6 p.m. We were dropped off a couple blocks away from Fenway, and joined the huge mobs of people making their way to the stadium. Im accustomed to Philadelphias sports arenas, which pop out from a distance. In contrast, Fenway Park was smaller in stature and peaked out from behind a couple buildings. We made our way across the highway and train tracks to the park grounds. Four Yawkey Way was bustling with fans, bars and concession stands, and people posing with the Ted Williams statue. Fenway is nearly 100 years old, and the park has an old-time classic feel and look (even Cracker Jacks are for sale!).

[The following paragraph is extraneous to travel, but worth mentioning] After trolling the grounds both outside and inside the park, we listened to the end of Willie Nelson & Familys set on the way to our seats. They were located in between home plate and first base at the Red Sox dugout. Unluckily for us, a huge speaker was blocking our view of the stage in centerfield and disrupted what should have been decent seats. While listening to Funny the Way it is, we were forced to contemplate our next move from our suddenly awful $150 dollar seating arrangements. In the midst of bashing corporate America for allowing such an abomination to occur, a worker from Live Nation approached our row and offered us obstruction-free seats. Not just any seats, butfield seats in the first section directly away from the stage. It was beyond nice, and very much appreciated!

The three-plus hours of the concert were great and the views from the field were amazing! In light of the nice nighttime weather, we walked back to the hotel and passed the Massachusetts State House (The Departed, anyone?).

The Kinsale Irish Pub and Restaurant

We began Saturday with a stop at The Kinsale Irish Pub and Restaurant in the heart of Boston. We ordered New England-brewed beers and, of course, some New England Clam Chowder. Yum!

Cheers

After taking in some of Earthfest 2009, we headed to the original Cheers bar from the popular TV show. We watched the Sox - Blue Jays game andvisited the place where everybody knows your name. Drinks are a tad expensive, which should be expected, but it's a fun place to check out!

Late Afternoon

During the day, we walked around the city and took in some of Boston's parks. Later that night, we went to The Hill Tavern, a restaurantacross the street from our hotel, the Holiday Inn at Beacon Hill.It wasn't too crowded and the atmosphere was fairly relaxed. The menu offered typical pub/restaurant fare and was reasonably priced (we splitthe homemadepizza - delicious! -and tortilla chips). Later on, we went toa local neighborhood bar to watch the NBA finals. The Sevens Ale Housewas friendly and had sensibly priced drinks for a downtown Boston locale (about $4 dollars a drink).

Checking out of the hotel and flying home the next morning were easy, but leaving Boston was not. Since we had to take a later flight on Friday, our stay was reduced to a day and a half. The essential to budget travel is to plan ahead. When it occurs to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new locations we have never been before, the reality of cost and budgeting is always in the back of our minds. Considering and expending our travel budget carefully is a main concern for most families. Minimizing spending and prices, while still delighting your vacation to its fullest, is the key to assured accomplishment and fiscal obligation. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thinking behind saving money while traveling is simple: Even if your personal funds is incredibly limited, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also remembering that while traveling, whether on a funds or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a huge vacation or travel expenses!. Nonetheless, Boston was a fun town with lots to see. Sites in our area of the city were easy to navigate and get to by foot. I would love to go back someday (and next time,take on a more historical tour of Boston)!
