A night on the town in DC for less than $30

For less than a full tank of gas, you can enjoy a drink or two at a local restaurant and see a live performance in the DC metro area.

All you have to do is take advantage of two great deals: Happy hours, which generally take place between 5 and 7 p.m. in many of the downtown restaurants, and membership in Goldstar, a service that provides discounted, and even free, tickets to performances and events in the city (indeed, around the country).

Happy hours are one of the best deals in town. Participating restaurants provide half-priced or discounted drinks and appetizers right around the time workers leave the office. It varies by restaurant, so call ahead to verify details or ask the bartender for the days, times and menu. Commonly, you must sit in the bar area to enjoy these deals.

Next, if you havent already, sign up for membership in Goldstar its free. Goldstar will be your ticket to free, half price or discounted deals on performances and events in DC, or other major cities.

A recent offer listed half-priced tickets to see Perpetuum Jazzile, a Slovenian a cappella group famous (based on more than 14 million views on YouTube) for singing Totos Africa, for only $13.50 at Lisner Auditorium. Better seats went for $18.50 on Goldstar, but you cant get a bad seat at George Washington Universitys Lisner Auditorium.

There was a $4 service charge, bringing the total to $17.50, which would have left $12.50 for a drink or two at a happy hour prior to the show. "The essential to budget travel is to prepare in front.
