American Motorcycle Association (AMA), call to action HR 7

The American Motorcycle Association, better known as AMA in the motorcycling community, has issued a call to action. Titled "Congress Considering Transportation Programs that Affect Motorcyclists", they urge you to write your representative.

In a nutshell, currently Congress is working on a national transportation bill that will include action on highway safety, congestion mitigation and tolling projects, while the American Motorcyclist Association is seeking passage of H.R. 7, the American Energy and Infrastructure Jobs Act of 2012. HR 7 is supported by the AMA because of its measures to address motorcycle safety, motorcyclist rights and motorized recreational access. Notably, the continuation of the Recreational Trails Program (RTP) is included in HR 7. The RTP is funded by fuel used for off-highway vehicle recreation to include snowmobiles, ATVs, off road motorcycles and off highway light trucks. HR 7 also has provisions for state highway safety programs to include initiatives that might prevent motorcycle crashes and those that limit establishment of a mandatory helmet law. It would also prohibit the US Department of Transportation from providing federal grants to states and local governments for discriminatory "motorcycle only" checkpoints.
