A motorcycle hill climb is an event where motorcycles race up a steep hill. Motorcycles attempt the climb one at a time and the motorcyclist who finishes the climb in the fastest time wins. Spectators as well as competitors can expect thrills and excitement as the bikes scream up the course, throwing rocks and dirt, as they crest the hill.

Motorcycle hill climbs started out as a bit of added fun to a weekend of backwoods riding. Often motorcyclists would race what they rode without modifications to their own dual sport bikes. Some bikers even attempted hill climbs on traditional street bikes such as Harley-Davidson Sportsters.

Todays hill climbs, especially on the pro circuit, are for highly modified motorcycles with elongated frames and cleated tires. Most hill climbs divide motorcycles according to engine size but even a 700cc engine has very little in common with a small street bike with the same sized engine.

Recently, the Dayton Motorcycle Club sponsored an AMA-sanctioned pro hill climb at the Devils Staircase in Oregonia, Ohio. The base of the hill was near the Little Miami River in southwest Ohio and the course took the competitors straight up a 390-foot hill that was graded into three distinctive stair steps.

This competition was divided into two classes: an Extreme Class for motorcycles under 700cc and the Unlimited Class for the rest. Racers in both classes were allowed to burn any type fuel they wanted and most were running the bikes on nitro methane (nitro). "The important to budget travel is to plan in front. When it comes to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved holidays and/or going to see new places we have never been before, the fact of cost and budgeting is always in the back of our heads. Preparation and consuming our travel budget properly is a consideration for most families. Minimizing expending and costs, while still taking pleasure in your vacation to its fullest, is the key to assured achievements and fiscal responsibility. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thought regarding saving money while journeying is simple: Even if your personal funds is highly small, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also recalling that while traveling, no matter whether on a price range or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a large vacation or travel bill!..".

A visit with the pit crew from the Triumph team (they had three bikes entered in the completion) yielded much in the form of what goes into the bikes as they are modified for charging up hillsides.

Each Triumph was of an early 1970s vintage and included two T-140s and one T-120. All had Nourish 8-valve heads, forged steel cranks, 7-ring pistons, and high strength connecting rods. The only thing standard on the bikes was the case and all three were running on nitro.

Oregonias fastest finishers in the Unlimited Class competition earned points towards a national champion designation and the right to race a bike with the number one in next years races. The winner for the June 2012 event in Oregonia was Jay Sallstrom with a time of 6.8 seconds.
