Right now, in some areas of the country there is a blanket of snow on the ground. In Virginia we have to wait a little longer and wish a little harder for a white Christmas, but that doesn't mean that your favorite winter sports are not available close by. There are four different resorts that are popular in the Commonwealth, and they have a lot to offer.
Massanutten Ski Resort is located close to the city of Harrisonburg, VA, and has been in operation for almost 40 years. This unique place to hit the slopes not only offers 13 runs, lessons, and rentals, but also a surrounding community of single family homes, condos and time shares. The resort is a year round facility and an exciting place to visit at any time. Their snow sports season which consists of skiing , snowboarding, and tubing, starts in early December and runs through mid March. Lift tickets here for adults range from $32-$74, depending on the time of day and how long you ski. Of course a season pass to any resort is a great idea, especiallyif you are planning to attend a large amount of times,and for Massanutten there is also a Special Season Passyou can purchase for $199 that is valid throughout most of the season. This pass can be used on most days with the exception of Holidays and some weekends.
Another option is Bryce Resortin Basye, VA, which was opened as a summer resort in 1909 and later added their ski slopes and other winter sports in the 1960's. Bryce is a slightly smaller mountain witha summit about 500 feet above the baseof the slopesand 8 runs, but it still has a lot to offer. Four restaurants are located in this mountain side resort, including a bar and loungewhere you can catchnight time entertainment during your stay, the areas surrounding the resort are alsogreat places to explore considering their history that dates back to the 1700's. If you are not planning on purchasing a season pass to Bryce, then it is worth your while to spend a weekday there for lower prices. Half day prices for lift tickets on weekdays are just $28 and $40 for full days (not including night skiing), butweekend prices are considerably higher at $44 for a half day and $57 for a full day. Kids 12 and under don't pay as much however, and if you are active military looking to ski be sure to let them know, becauseyou'll receive a discount of$5-$10 on your lift ticket.
The Homestead is located in thelovely Allegheny Mountains and isknown for many things including its history, beautiful hotel, and outdoor activities. Some people don't realize that they have their own place to ski on the expansive property as well.The Homesteadhas 5 lifts that serve 9 trails for both beginners and more advanced skiers and snowboarders. Winter at this resortmakes you want to get out and play, not only to ski, but to take part in all of their other sports like ice skating, snowtubing, and snowmobiling.Unique opportunities to participate in snowmobile tours are provided after the slopes close for the day, where you'll have a safety lesson before embarking on either a half hour or 2 hourtour of the trails. The rates for aday of skiing do not differ greatly whether you are a guest at the hotel or not, and are generally not more expensive in comparison to other mountains.
Wintergreen's 11,000 acres are packed with activities for families and couples on vacation.OnDecember 12th when the ski season opens, visitors enjoy 26 trails, 7 total lifts, andVirginia's largest tubing park,at the place named "Best Ski Resort" by the readers of Washingtonpost.com. Wintergreenprovides lessons, rentals, andlights 14 of its slopes for night skiing.
