One of most affordable and educational travel activities to do is to visit a national park. The National Park Service lists eight national parks in Hawaii, five on the Big Island, one on Maui, one on Molokai and one of Oahu - each worthy of a visit. Residents and travelers explore Hawaiis national parks to marvel at the awesome natural wonders, visit ancient and recent Hawaiian settlements and pay homage to Americas past.

Here are the parks located on Maui and Molokai:

Maui
Haleakala National Park, established in 1916 as a unit of Hawaii National Park. In 1960, Congress authorized the establishment of Haleakala National Park as a separate unit of the National Park System. In Hawaiian, Haleakala means "House of the sun."

The park features the dormant Haleakal? Volcano, which last erupted at around 1790 and is divided into two distinct sections: the summit area and the coastal Kipahulu area. Hiking in Haleakala, HTA photo by Ron Dahlquist

Entrance Fees: All park visitors are required to purchase a recreational use pass upon entering Haleakala National Park.

Daily passes are non-transferrable and are valid for 3 days including the date of purchase.

Private Vehicle: $10. Valid for 3 days. Admits private, non-commercial vehicle (14 pax capacity or less) and all occupants to Haleakala National Park including both the Summit and Kipahulu Areas.

Motorcycle: $5. Valid for 3 days. Admits one individual on a private, non-commercial motorcycle to Haleakala National Park including both the Summit and Kipahulu Areas. Any passengers pay the per person fee.

Per Person: $5. The essential to budget travel is to approach in front. When it comes to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved trips and/or going to see new places we have never been before, the truth of cost and budgeting is often in the back of our heads. Considering and spending our travel budget correctly is a main concern for most families. Minimizing spending and costs, while still enjoying your vacation to its fullest, is the key to confirmed success and fiscal obligation. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thinking behind saving money while touring is simple: Even if your personal budget is incredibly small, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also thinking about that while traveling, no matter whether on a finances or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a huge vacation or travel bill!. Valid for 3 days. Admits one individual with no car to Haleakala National Park including both the Summit and Kipahulu Areas- typically used for bicyclists, hikers and pedestrians. Youth 15 and under are admitted free.

Molokai
Kalaupapa National Historical Park, established in 1980. The primary story being told at Kalaupapa National Historical Park is the forced isolation from 1866 until 1969 of people from Hawai'i afflicted with Hansen's disease (leprosy) to the remote northern Kalaupapa peninsula on the island of Molokai. Entrance Fee: Free
