Since gas has decreased four cents a gallon from a week ago, Memorial Day weekend will be a great time to take a road trip. Skip the barbeque this year and take your family on a fun day-trip to an Illinois state park, or visit one of the 28 water parks in the Wisconsin Dells. Plane flights and trains can sometimes be more expensive on holiday days or weekends, so it makes sense to look into your road trip options from Chicago. Some of these road trip ideas are family-friendly, while others are more for young adults. For cheaper overnight accommodations, visit http://www.airbnb.com/ to rent anothers place on your trip. With a month until the weekend, try to start planning your trip soon, as hotels and other accommodations will most likely book up. Have plans for Memorial Day weekend already? Look into these options for a summer road trip with your significant other and/or your children:

Starved Rock, Illinois State Park: This intriguing destination, located 94 miles away from Chicago, includes 13 miles of trails, the Illinois River (also known as the Sauger Capitol), camping and more. At the Park, one can choose to camp, stay at a cabin like one of the four Sunset Cabins, or stay at the Starved Rock Lodge, which has 91 guest rooms and 31 cabins. Excluding the two-room Pioneer cabin, prices range from $90 to $155 per night. The Web site for the Park is easily navigable, with a calendar to search events for specific days. Daytime and evening short cruises are available; couples can look into getaway packages, too. If you are looking for a short one or two-night trip, this could be a beautiful weekend trip for everyone, including families, young adults and retirees. Gas prices in Utica, IL are around $3.64 for regular, so make sure to fill up your tank at the Park.

Lake Geneva: Just 80 miles or two hours away from Chicago, this quaint town offers popular activities such as shopping, dining, pampering and golf (http://www.lakegenevawi.com/). One will spend around $3.79 per gallon on gas. Pick one of twelve hotels, inns or lodges to stay during your weekend getaway, but also make sure to look into the two campgrounds. More than ten bed and breakfasts are in the town, too. It is a great short trip for young adults and couples. Families could find activities, of course, but most of the activities are geared toward a higher age group. If you still want to book a short trip to Lake Geneva during Memorial Day weekend, save your sweet tooth for the 26th annual Burlington ChocolateFest, which runs from Fri., May 25 through Mon., May 28.

The Wisconsin Dells: The Dells is a wonderful summertime activity for families, about 193 miles, or three and a half hours away from Chicago. Gas prices by the gallon in the Dells range from $3.73 to $3.89, but double-check before going. Choose to stay overnight in one of six bed & breakfasts, twenty campgrounds/resorts or more than five vacation home rentals. The Dells offers almost 100 activities, including animal-related attractions, museums, sports & recreation, indoor and outdoor water parks, spas and more. The water parks are well-known internationally for their expansions of rides and slides; most visitors come to the Dells to enjoy the 28 water parks.

Devils Lake: For the adventurers, Devils Lake offers almost every major outdoor activity. Hiking, biking, rock climbing and swimming are just some of the thrills one can experience at this State Park, which is around 190 miles, or three hours and forty minutes from Chicago. Expect to spend around $3.73 a gallon in gas. Camping at this destination is extremely affordable, only $22 per out-of-state individual, including an electric fee. Groups can decide to do activities, particularly rock climbing, on their own or have a guided tour. Inside the park, one can bike about eight miles in the Uplands Loop or hike over 29 miles of trail, including fourteen specific trails. While groups of young adults venture here for outdoor activities, families can also make a fun weekend trip here. "The important to budget travel is to prepare onward. When it comes to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new places we have never been before, the fact of expense and budgeting is often in the back of our thoughts. Considering and expending our travel budget correctly is a concern for most families. Curbing expending and prices, while still experiencing your vacation to its fullest, is the key to certain accomplishment and fiscal responsibility. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thinking behind economizing money while journeying is simple: Even if your personal finances is really limited, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also remembering that while traveling, no matter whether on a funds or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a big vacation or travel expenses!..". The State Park has two very large sandy beaches, with picnic and childrens play areas. Also, canoe and kayak rentals are available for $10-$12 per hour, not including a deposit fee. One can stay overnight at a family-friendly campground, too.

Look into each option carefully when choosing which trip is best suited for the wants and needs of your family or for you and your significant other. Late May and the summer months are wonderful times of year to try a short road trip to limit spending on transportation while still having an amazing and relaxing getaway.
