Social coupon sites, which provide users with the opportunity to purchase something at a lower price, are increasingly gaining in popularity with the public. The social aspect is that the user has an incentive, such as getting the advertised item at an even lower cost (or even free) or money to use on the site, to refer their friends to the deal. In addition to signing up for email alerts for your own city, you can log in and see what deals are available for that next city you're traveling to. Utilizing these sites is a great way to save some money at home and when traveling.
Reflecting the concept's popularity, new social group coupon sites are multiplying rapidly. "The important to budget travel is to plan in advance. Groupon
Groupon was all over the news recently because of the rumor (later proved false) that Google was buying it for $2.5 billion. Even before the media frenzy, Groupon had already established itself as the biggest social coupon site.
How it works: Subscribe and get email alerts advertising a daily deal. Once purchased, print out the voucher and use it according to the terms and conditions. Advertise the deal to your friends through email and your own social networks. Every time you refer a friend and the friend purchases a Groupon deal, you get $10 Groupon Bucks which can be used toward any Groupon purchase and never expire.
Groupon has deals for cities in 46 states, Washington D.C., and seven Canadian provinces.
Current / Recent deals in San Francisco: $175 for three laser hair removal treatments at Serenity MedSpa. $92 admission for one to the Preview Opening Gala of the Arts of Pacific Asia Show at the Asian Art Museum.
LivingSocial
How it works: Same as the Groupon process, except that if you get three of your friends to buy the deal, yours is free.
LivingSocial has deals for cities throughout the United States as well as cities in Europe and Australia.
Current / Recent deals in San Francisco: $50 to spend in Capurro's Restaurant for $25. $85 for a couples massage at Bliss Spa.
TripAlertz
How it works: TripAlertz is considered the Groupon for travel. While Groupon and LivingSocial sometimes feature travel deals, TripAlertz is focused exclusively on hotel deals and packages. Members can vote on upcoming deals that they want to go live. The deals go live every Tuesday and are bookable for two weeks. After purchasing a deal, there's an incentive to spread the word as the price you ultimately pay for the deal decreases, to what they call an Epic Price, when a certain number of users buy the deal. Additional incentives include TripAlertz Trip Cash for the first few users to book a deal and $5 Trip Cash for every friend you invite that joins the site.
TripAlertz has travel deals for locations throughout the world.
Current / Recent deals: $444 for a three night stay at the Renaissance Toronto Downtown and entrance to the CN Tower for two people. $1496 for a four night stay in an Ocean View room at the all-inclusive Hilton Papagayo Costa Rica Resort & Spa for two people and a $50 spa credit (per room).
Active.com Schwaggle
How it works: Launched on January 11, Active.com's Schwaggle is specifically for athletes and active-minded people. Instead of a deal enticing you to a gut-busting meal, you'll get discounted entry to a marathon or a ticket to a sporting game. Offers are presented three times a week.
Deals for Los Angeles, New York and Chicago are expected to launch soon. By the end of the year, they expect to launch deals in 20 markets.
Current / Recent deals: $49 for the Sports Massage Package at Bodytonic Massage. $50 for entry to the Oakland Marathon.
