Why ... Waikele

There are three reasons why I would suggest taking a drive out to Waikele, located about 30 minutes west of Waikiki: golf, outlet stores and a great restaurant.

GOLF: Designed by internationally renowned golf course architect Ted Robinson, golfers will enjoy the par 72 Waikele Country Club which overlooks Pearl Harbor and the Waianae Mountains. Waikele features a golf shop, locker rooms, restaurant, and a full-service driving range and putting greens. Club and shoe rentals and lessons are available, and Waikele's PGA golf professionals share pointers on course strategy. Golfis $130 for visitors. Phone: (808) 676-9000.

OUTLET MALL: If youre not a golfer, Waikele Premium Outlets with over 50 stores, is located just below the golf course. You are sure to find great savings at outlets for AX Armani Exchange, Banana Republic, BCBG Max Azria, Barneys New York, Brooks Brothers, Calvin Klein, Coach, LeSportsac, MaxMara, Michael Kors, Polo Ralph Lauren, Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th, Tommy Hilfiger and more. Besides having this great collection of designer brands, it is Hawaiis only outlet center.

DINING: Sushi Ten (left) is located within the Waikele Clubhouse so it shares some of the same views as the golf course. It's open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Cocktails are also served and there is a private room which holds about 60 persons great for birthday parties, wedding showers and small banquets. They also do catering.

The restaurant serves Japanese and American fare and the same menu is offered for lunch and dinner with very reasonable prices probably to lure golfers in after their game but also to attract residents.

On the American side of the menu, there are salads and sandwiches as well as seafood, beef and chicken entrees. On the Japanese side, there's sushi, noodle and soup selections, donburi, nabemono and teishoku or set meal
choices.

My favorite is the two-choice teishoku option. Recently, I had my favorite Garlic Fried Chicken and Tempura combo for $16.00. Teishokus include rice, miso soup, tsukemono, tossed salad and comes in a wooden lunch box.

Im not a golfer so will often combine Waikele outlet shopping followed by lunch or dinner at Sushi Ten on the weekend.
