Wish you could save $3,000 for travel in one year? Its easier than you think. Here are five steps you can take to get to your next trip.
1.BYOB (Be Your Own Barista). For the price of just a few Starbucks lattes, you can buy your own brew. If you get your coffee fix at home, you save big over time.
Lets say youre stopping at Starbucks four days each week at $4 per grande beverage. If you start making your own coffee at home, youll save $16 per week, a healthy $832 per year. You can buy Starbucks ground coffee or go with a less expensive. A large canister of Folgers Coffee retails for $8.49 at Tom Thumb, and makes the equivalent of about 90 Starbucks grande drinks.
2.Make your money work. Assuming that youve been a smarty in this scary economy, lets talk about making your savings work for you in a safe way. CDs and IRAs come in many shapes and sizes.
Use the Compare Rates tool on bankrate.com to find the best returns for CDs and IRAs in your area. You may not want to put your entire savings in, but you can probably afford to put in a portion. Better that it earn something, than leave it in a savings with little or no earnings.
Lets say you put $1,000 in a CD with a 1.5 percent return. Thats another $15 toward your goal.
3.Travel green, save green. Have you ever driven across the county for a good deal on a purchase only to realize that the cost in fuel outweighed the savings? Try to cut your daily travel costs by carpooling, walking, riding a bike or taking public transportation.
If you live and work in Dallas, for example, you can purchase a DART pass good for bus and rail service. A DART Annual Pass costs $500. Leave your car at home and green your work commute.
Lets assume you have a daily work commute of 20 miles, your car gets 25 mpg, and gas costs $2 per gallon. (There are commute calculators that can provide exact numbers for you.) Using DARTs calculator for this example, your monthly cost of driving is $200.
If you use the annual pass for your work to commute, you will save $2,400 minus the $500 for the pass. Thats a whopping $1,900 in savings toward your goal.
4.Out with the old, in with the cash. Gather all the things collecting dust in your home. Set a date for a yard sale and price the items a few at a time as the date approaches. You should be able to host two or three successful sales in one year. Go through your closet and set aside items that are nice, but no longer something youll wear.
When youve gathered a good bounty of clothes, handbags, shoes, etc., head to a shop like Clotheshorse Anonymous or Platos Closet. Platos will buy your items much the way Half Price Books buys gently used books. Check the website to find the in-demand brands. Clotheshorse is a consignment shop. You get a contract with the shop and earn 50 percent of the sale price for sales within 60 days, more for select designers.
Items left after the yard sales can be packed away for a future sale or donated to Goodwill or Salvation Army. You can get a tax deduction for these donations, by the way.
Lets say you earn $300 a year from these sales.
5.Get hooked on coupons. Buy the Sunday edition of the newspaper. The Sunday edition of The Dallas Morning News often offers hundreds in coupons and costs only $2.
Not in the mood for a trip to the newsstand? While your online, check out coupon sites like RedPlum, SmartSource and Coupons.com. You can also go to sites for grocery stores to view the latest specials and compare deals before you head out.
Look at the receipt and see how much youve saved with coupons and put that amount toward your travel funds. Lets say you are at the grocery store once a week and average $5 in savings per trip. Thats $260 in one year.
These 5 tips have lead to an estimated savings of more than $3,300. Your goal has been exceeded. Now all you have to do is choose your adventure.
