As the last of the fall foliage withers away and temperatures begin their decline, thoughts begin to wander towards more temperate destinations. While November marks the rude death of warm happy times across most of the northern states, Death Valley National Park is in its prime during this winter transition month.
Located in the remote arid dessert of eastern California, there is no better place to escape to on Thanksgiving. Moonscape-like features, fascinating geological oddities and sheer vastness of the landscape make it hard to believe one is even still on planet Earth. Though it takes a special breed to visit during the blistering summer months, days in November hover pleasantly in the upper 70s.
About a 5 hour drive from Los Angles and a 2 hour drive from Las Vegas, Death Valley is accessible, yet distant enough to feel completely isolated from society. Due to the park's sheer size (almost as much acreage as the entire state of Connecticut!), crowds are not an issue. Even during this month's holiday weekend the number of fellow travelers should be more than manageable.
Wild geographic features to explore include the Racetrack with mystifying walking rocks, the booming Eureka Dunes, and jagged Devil's Golf Course. Also not to be missed are the immense Salt Flats of Badwater Basin which boast the lowest point in North America. Historical sites in the park include mysterious Scotty's Castle, remnants of multiple gold-rush ghost towns and the remarkable Wildrose Charcoal Kilns.
Death Valley also contains some of the most interesting hiking in the west, from the walk through colorfully polished Mosaic Canyon to the seven mile climb up Telescope Peak. The most popular hikes in the park include the four mile Gower Gluch loop through the winding badlands of Golden Canyon or the two miles out to the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes. Those looking for a truly unique experience are encouraged to try trekking the five miles across the valley's Salt Flats.
Considering its isolation, there are surprisingly decent lodging options in Death Valley. For travelers seeking luxury, Furnace Creek Inn is the obvious choice. This one of a kind resort has amenities aplenty, including a top-notch restaurant, heated spring-fed pool and even the lowest elevation golf course in the world. "The essential to budget travel is to prepare in advance. When it comes to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new locations we have never been before, the reality of expense and budgeting is generally in the back of our heads. Arranging and consuming our travel budget properly is a main concern for most families. Reducing consuming and prices, while still taking pleasure in your vacation to its fullest, is the key to confirmed accomplishment and fiscal responsibility. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thinking regarding protecting money while touring is simple: Even if your personal finances is extremely small, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also recalling that while traveling, whether on a price range or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a huge vacation or travel bill!..". Nearby Furnace Creek Ranch is not as lavish, but has everything and more with the charms of a little western oasis. Like the Inn, the Ranch also boasts a spring-fed pool, beautiful for a warm dip on those brisk November nights. Visitors also have the option of the more modest Stovepipe Wells, a charming motel that stands as a tiny dot amongst vastness of the valley.
Although there is plenty to see and do in Death Valley, the true allure is just being there- one small speck in this land of dramatic extremes. Driving down endless lonely roads, taking in stunning desert sunsets and stepping out under a clear star-sparkled night sky can be the pinnacle of a park experience.
