Take a modern city skyline and place it right next to a 19th-century fort (or at least a replica of a 19th-century fort). Take an old warehouse building and convert it into a modern nightclub. Look across the street from an old courthouse and find an art museum with modern, abstract sculptures on the lawn. Take an old basketball venue, close it down, raise the roof and make it new all over again. And then look across the street and find a grave of an American folklore legend.
This juxtaposition of old and new is exactly what you'll find in Fort Wayne, Indiana: an eclectic place that, in its very name, has never forgotten where it came from.
On my afternoon trip to Fort Wayne I saw the gravesite of John "Johnny Appleseed" Chapman, a replica of an 1815 fort designed to protect settlers against Native Americans, a trendy nightclub built in the shadow of an old textile factory, a renewed coliseum that formerly housed an NBA franchise, and a factory town in desperate need for renewal.
So is Fort Wayne a relic or in the midst of a renewal? You'll have to determine that for yourself when you visit for a day trip.
