About as often as my wanderlust kicks in, my bank account prevents me from acting on it. One of the easiest ways to quell a bit of travel itch without breaking the bank is to see a good travel flick on the big screen. 2008 was a bit disappointing in terms of quality travel movies. Sure, there were a few diamonds in the rough -- Vicky Cristina Barcelona and Slumdog Millionaire -- but other than that, fairly lackluster. The good news is: 2009 is shaping up to be a pleasant armchair traveling year on the big screen. Here are five films coming out this year that are sure to send you yearning for another stamp or two on the passport.

Wendy and Lucy: Michelle Williams plays Wendy, a young woman drifting from Indiana to Alaska (see photo). The plot focuses on the rather grim realities of her odyssey: loneliness, fiscal responsibility, and determination. Set against the backdrop of the Pacific Northwest, Oregon and Washington, the movie takes place mainly outdoors and registers the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest with unostentatious affection, according to a December review in the New York Times. The film is rated R and has made the circuit through a number of festivals and will play in DC for one week at E Street Cinema starting Friday, Jan. 30.

Angels and Demons: The adaptation of Dan Browns novel is sure to showcase Rome on the big screen as 2006s The Da Vinci Code did for Paris. Tom Hanks is back as Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon on a wild chase through the Vatican looking for clues about a secret brotherhood known as the Illuminati. The film opens nationwide May 15.

Night at the Museum 2: This sequel to 2006s Night at the Museum finds bumbling security guard Larry Daley (Ben Stiller) in a hometown haunt: the Smithsonian. Twentieth Century Foxs synopsis of the film says the movie will bring the museum complex to life, including the plane Amelia Earhart flew on her nonstop solo flight across the Atlantic and Al Capone's rap sheet and mug shot to Dorothy's ruby red slippers and Archie Bunker's lounge chair." The film opens nationwide May 22.

The Rum Diary: A film adaptation of a young Hunter S. Thompsons novel about a freelance journalists relocatation to Puerto Rico and involvement in expat intrigue. Rumor has it Johnny Depp is slated to play Paul Kemp, the journalist. A release date for this film has not yet been announced.

A Walk in the Woods: Another film adaptation of literature, A Walk in the Woods brings perennial travel writer Bill Brysons comedic and heart-wrenching tale of hiking the Appalachian Trail to the big screen. Robert Redford is said to be producing and starring in the film version of the 1998 travelogue, but no release date has been announced yet.
