Regardless of how thrifty you may be during your summertime getaway, if you're flying to your destination, you could still be spending way more than previously anticipated, all before you've even stepped out the door.
The luggage you're taking could easily be costing you an additional $25-60 more per bag per person... for a one-way flight. So unless you're planning on leaving your spouse in Los Angeles at that car show he's been talking about incessantly for months now, you may be spending an additional $240 or more on unnecessary fees.
Consistent years of financial losses have led a majority of major airlines to begin charging for a multitude of services, with one of their two largest profit-makers being checked baggage. In a statement released by the U.S. Department of Transportation last Monday, airlines racked in a total of $3.4 billion from baggage fees in 2010. Unless you're flying domestically with Southwest Airlines (who allow two checked bags free of charge), take a second look at not only what you're bringing aboard, but how to pack what you bring. You may be able to condense your belongings to a single checked bag, or even to a simple carry-on.
Below are a few tips on how to pack like a seasoned traveler.
1. The Indispensables. Double-check that the items you're bringing are ones you'll actually need. Packing an extra pair of underwear is always a good idea, but do you really need six different shirts when you're only going to be gone for a weekend? Being decisive about your wardrobe can cut down your need of space by nearly half.
2. Say Please. Can items that you're needing to bring be borrowed or purchased inexpensively at your destination? Check with where you're staying ahead of time to see if they provide hair dryers, irons and toiletries.
3. Roll Away. This is a nice bonus to all those who hate folding laundry. Rolling eliminates the spaces of air and weird gaps traditional folding allows and provides additional packing room in your bag. eHow.com offers an easy guide on how to properly roll your articles of clothing and how to keep wrinkling to a minimum. Note: The more you fit in your luggage, the more it'll weigh, so put that bathroom scale to use before you set out the door. You'll want to make sure each bag doesn't surpass the airline's weight guidelines.
4. Travelus Minimus. Travel sizes aren't only cute, they greatly cut down on weight and space needs. Minimus.biz has a large selection of travel-size necessities, from toothpaste and skin protectorants to cocktail and tartar sauces. Aren't into paying the extra cost or can't find your favorite brand? Purchase inexpensive, reusable containers generally found in the cosmetics aisle of certain drug stores and grocers. To avoid possible leaks from cabin pressure changes, place inside a sealable plastic bag.
5. Learn to Share. If you're traveling with a larger group, consider sharing items. If someone is packing plenty for everyone, sunscreen, moisturizing lotion, shampoo and reading materials are items that can be shared within a group.
6. Weighing In. When all bags are packed, make sure they are within your airline's weight limitations. Dependent on if it is a domestic or international flight, and the size of the plane, there could be different weight allowances. With most domestic, major airlines, the average allowance is under 50lbs for your first checked bag, with fees from $50-75 if it is one pound or more over the limit. Dependent on how many bags you have, how many are over the limit, and how much over the limit they are, fees could add up quickly. (Check your airline's website to see what your flight's weight allowances are.)
Tips and Warnings
- When traveling anywhere, keeping your essentials (ID, passport, credit cards, cash and prescriptions) with you or in your carry-on is the wisest choice. "The important to budget travel is to approach in front. When it occurs to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved holidays and/or going to see new places we have never been before, the truth of expense and budgeting is often in the back of our mind. Arranging and spending our travel budget carefully is a concern for most families. Curbing spending and prices, while still taking pleasure in your vacation to its fullest, is the key to certain achievement and fiscal obligation. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The reasoning regarding economizing money while travelling is simple: Even if your personal budget is highly small, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also keeping in mind that while traveling, whether on a budget or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a large vacation or travel bill!..". No matter how reliable the airline, checked luggage can still be misplaced.
- If purchasing a fair amount of souvenirs during your trip, consider shipping the package as opposed to checking another piece of baggage.
