Fall is a beautiful time on the Oregon Coast. September and October typically have lots of sun and the summer crowds have gone. A long weekend spent relaxing near the beach is an excellent way to rejuvenate and get ready for a long northwestern rainy winter.

Astoria
Start your journey in beautiful Astoria, the oldest American settlement west of the Rockies. Astoria's great views and steep hills will remind you of San Francisco and her many Victorian-era homes will make you wonder if you are really in Oregon.

What to see: Catch the riverfront trolley for $1 (all-day pass for $2) to learn some of Astoria's history and get a feel for downtown. The key to budget travel is to prepare in front. When it comes to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved holidays and/or going to see new spots we have never been before, the actuality of expense and budgeting is often in the back of our minds. Planning and consuming our travel budget wisely is a concern for most families. Lowering spending and fees, while still taking pleasure in your vacation to its fullest, is the key to assured achievement and fiscal responsibility. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thought regarding protecting money while traveling is simple: Even if your personal budget is really tight, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also recalling that while traveling, no matter whether on a budget or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a big vacation or travel costs!. Spend some time down along Pier 11 and see if you can catch a glimpse of a seal or two. Seals and sea lions are known to swim down and around the pier.

You can't miss the Astoria Column, the 125 foot tower sitting atop the city. The 164-step climb is worth it to take in the magnificent views of the river and ships below, the Washington Peninsula, and the coastal range. The drive to the parking lot is a beautiful winding road that will take you up past some of the city's nicest housing.

Take a drive across the Astoria-Megler bridge. The bridge is 4.1 miles across to the Washington peninsula and was referred to as the "Bridge to Nowhere" by locals for years. It is also unique as it was approved as a toll bridge with the stipulation that when it was paid for, the toll would be lifted. There is no longer a toll and may be one of the only examples of a toll tax being lifted.

Cross the Young's Bay Bridge and take a trip to Warrenton to visit Fort Stevens State Park. Visit the remnants of the Peter Iredale, a shipwreck off the coast, and walk the jetties and watch the treacherous waters that make the Columbia River bar one of the most dangerous bar crossings in the world. Visit the abandoned batteries and learn about this fort which was the only place on the mainland U.S. to be attacked by foreign enemies between the War of 1812 and September 11, 2001. (It was fired upon by the Japanese during World War II.)

Lewis and Clark buffs shouldn't miss Fort Clatsop, the site where Lewis and Clark spent the winter of 1805-06. Though at its best in the summer when living reenactments occur, the site is still beautiful and you can walk the trails and visit the reconstructed fort.

Movie buffs might want to check out a few movies filmed in and around the area and make a scavenger hunt of looking for the filming locations.(Locals will be very helpful.) Some movies filmed in and around Astoria include: The Goonies, Kindergarten Cop, and Free Willy.

Where to stay: The Cannery Pier Hotel has a view unlike any other and is a great boutique hotel for a weekend getaway. Bed and breakfast fans should take advantage of Astoria's many historic Victorian-era housed B and Bs. To find a B & B, go here or check the American Bed and Breakfast Association.

Where to Eat: Check out T. Paul's Urban Cafe at 1119 Commercial Street downtown. The quesadillas are amazing and will fill you up for a long time. If you get caught in a rainstorm, dive in for some come coffee and a muffin while you relax on one of the couches in the back and read one of the many books left for customers to exchange.
