Local motorcycle enthusiast Jack Klorick in accident with 18 wheeler

Local motorcycle enthusiast and advocate for motorcycle legislation that supports riders and motorcycle awareness, Jack Klorik, was involved in a motorcycle accident Friday evening with an 18 wheeler. The accident happened at the intersection of Hwy 43 and FM 134, in Harrison County, Texas, as he was on his way home from the Boo Benefit in Jefferson, Texas.

Jack was making a left turn on to FM 134 when he was t-boned by the 18 wheeler. I spoke to Jack this weekend and again this morning and he said that he was so thankful, and that it could have been much worse. He said he was going only 3 or 4 mph when the truck hit him.

He said:

"I was in the turn lane, and I straddled the bike going down, and the truck ran over me with the bumper, and then backed over me. I could have been in that lime green stuff with reflective gear and all, and it wouldn't have mattered. He didn't look. The weight of that thing, when it hit my bike, even at low speed was unbelievable. I saw it fixin' to hit me, and "bam", well, it's no match for a motorcycle, or a kid on a bicycle, or a pedestrian, for that matter. I'm glad I had a helmet because my head did hit the pavement and it helped save me."

Jack sustained serious injuries in the accident that include a broken ankle, problems with both knees, bruises and road rash, and is on a lot of pain medication. He will undergo an MRI today to determine the extent of injuries to his knees. Jack told me that he is a strong advocate for motorcycle safety and its legislation to protect riders and has heard many times "I didn't see the motorcycle", from motorists who have hit a rider. He said now that he has experienced it first hand, he wants even more to be an advocate for rider safety, and protection from inattentive motorists. The driver of the 18 wheeler was sited for "Failure to Yield".

Jack was fortunate to walk away from the accident with his life. "The important to budget travel is to approach onward. When it occurs to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved holidays and/or going to see new places we have never been before, the truth of expense and budgeting is often in the back of our mind. I can't even imagine what kind of sick feeling it is when you see that 18 wheeler coming at you."
