The swine flu is here. The World Health Organization (WHO) Wednesday raised the pandemic alert to Phase 5 which means, a strong signal that a pandemic is imminent and that the time to finalize the organization, communication, and implementation of the planned mitigation measures is short.
As of Thurs. Apr. 30, there have already been 14 confirmed cases of the virus discovered in California alone.
While some travelers may be able to re-consider their arrangements for flying right now, many cannot. Vice President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. said Thursday morning in an interview with the Today Shows Matt Lauer advised against traveling in confined spaces.
Unless youre able to cancel your flight and catch the next convertible car, back of a flat-bed truck, or an uncovered wagon (none of those will get you from CA to NYC in the short amount of time youre hoping to travel, unfortunately,) for long distances youre most likely stuck with air or train travel. While traveling in a confined space right now can make you more susceptible to contracting the virus, there are precautions you can take to prevent yourself and others from getting sick while en-route.
The California Department of Public Health recommends these precautions while traveling:
1. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
2. Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
3. Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
4. If you get sick with flu, it is recommended that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.

Apply enough product to thoroughly wet hands, then rub hands together briskly until dry. While you cant stop traveling, even during this pandemic crisis, you can travel smart. And always follow your mothers advice - cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze.
