The Commonwealth Shakespeare Company will host its free showing of The Comedy of Errors on the Boston Common every Tuesday through Sunday evening, beginning Friday, July 31 and running through Sunday, August 16,

Since 2005, for a few short weeks each summer, the Boston Common travels back to Elizabethan times as The Commonwealth Shakespeare Company (CSC) presents a free Shakespearean play to beach blanket carrying, picnic basket toting crowds. These presentations are not only a fun low-budget activity for couples, groups friends, and budding summer romancers but they are also high quality performances by serious actors.

The shows, which are hosted by the non-profit, CSC, are open to the general public and they usually draw crowds in the thousands each night. Past performances have included: As You Like It , A Midsummers Night Dream , Taming of the Shrew , Hamlet , and others prior to their performances on the Commons.

Viewers should expect the shows, which begin at 8pm every night except for Sundays (7pm) to be quite crowdedespecially as Bostonians and tourists try to weather the economic climate with free activities and shortened staycations. To view the entireschedule, click here.

In fact, both sides of this performer-viewer dichotomy will be feeling the effects of tightened purse strings: as CSC has had to scale down their set and rehearsals a bit this summer to weather the economic storm. The key to budget travel is to approach in advance. When it occurs to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new spots we have never been before, the actuality of cost and budgeting is always in the back of our minds. Organizing and expending our travel budget carefully is a main concern for most families. Minimizing consuming and costs, while still taking pleasure in your vacation to its fullest, is the key to guaranteed achievement and fiscal obligation. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thinking behind protecting money while vacationing is simple: Even if your personal finances is really limited, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also remembering that while traveling, regardless of whether on a budget or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a large vacation or travel expenses!. Steven Maler, CSC Director, explained in an interviewwith WBUR about this predicament facing of many of these free concerts and showings around Bostonbut assures us that theyve chosen The Comedy of Errors because its the shortest comedy in the cannon: they hope that its brevity and one set stage will help them to keep costs down (shorter rehearsal times) while maintaining their artistic integrity.

Also be on the lookout for even more CSC volunteers this summer, seeking donations to begin fundraising for next summers performances (all the funds that made this years performance possible were collected before the collapse of the global economy). For now, we can only hope that these wonderful performances in a world of $10 movie tickets and $7 ice cream cones will continue to thrive for summers to come.

Perhaps this year, as the dozens of volunteers come round to try and solicit funds to keep this program running, you can take a moment to consider what these family-friendly, free activities mean to your summer experience. And hopefully next summer, youll find thatthere was really"Much Ado About Nothing"involving this financial arts-crisisas you sit on the same beach blanket watching well played Shakespeareyet again.

For now, like they say in show biz: The show must go on!
