Budget Travel reports that New York hotel rates are down by 15% from a year ago. A sign of a struggling economy: yes. And perhaps a sign that you should make this the year to get to the Big Apple.
New York can be expensive. But in my years of traveling there I've found that it can be done for less than most people think. Lodging, and travel to and from are the most expensive elements. Great food can be had for pretty cheap and entertainment? Just being there is entertaining.
Getting There
The good news is you can get there by flying into three airports (JFK, LaGuardia and Newark), or by train (AmTrak goes right into the middle of Manhattan). I've arrived by car but I wouldn't recommend it for the novice.
Lodging
If you can afford it, stay in Manhattan. Everything is close and convenient and you can run back to your hotel for an afternoon nap or to download your pictures if you need to. Hotels and youth hostels abound. When you look for a hotel, just be aware that some budget hotels may require you to share a bathroom with others. So be sure and check for that if that isn't your cup of tea. Everything is connected by subway and Manhattan is relatively safe, so getting around shouldn't be a problem.
If you're adventurous and budget-minded, consider getting a hotel near the Newark (NJ) Penn train station or in one of the boroughs (Brooklyn, Queens or Bronx). Hotel prices usually drop in half (or less) once you get off of Manhattan and trains and buses make it very affordable to get back and forth. I've stayed in Queens at a Holiday Inn Express for about a third of the price of a room in Manhattan. I've stayed by the Newark train station several times and had great experiences. There's a Hilton right across the street and a round-trip ticket to and from Manhattan is $7 for adults. A few of the nicer hotels further out have shuttles that will take you to and from the train station, but you wouldn't want to walk in this area after dark. And you'll also have to haul everything in with you for the day.
Getting Around
New York taxis are much cheaper than most cities but save them for a late-night trip or a ride from the airport. The subway system is amazing. Stops are everywhere you want to go and there are buses in between. I never take the bus because walking is half the fun in New York. The 1-day Unlimited Ride Fun Pass is $7.50 and it is well worth it. (A seven-day Fun Pass will set you back just $25.) Take a minute to get your bearings before you head below to catch a subway. Look at a subway map and make sure you have your uptown and downtown straight and you won't get confused down below in the web of underground trains. Everything moves very quickly down there and if you know what you're looking for before you are in the midst of it, you'll feel much more confident.
I'll post some of my favorite cheap restaurants and how to see the best of New York for less, very soon.
