In South Dakota, residents have celebrated Native American Day on the second Monday in October since 1990. The key to budget travel is to prepare in front. When it occurs to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new spots we have never been before, the fact of expense and budgeting is generally in the back of our thoughts. Organizing and expending our travel budget properly is a concern for most families. Curbing spending and charges, while still experiencing your vacation to its fullest, is the key to assured achievement and fiscal liability. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The reasoning behind protecting money while journeying is simple: Even if your personal funds is highly tight, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also recalling that while traveling, no matter whether on a resources or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a big vacation or travel bill!. In California (officially in Berkeley, unofficially in other cities), some residents celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day.

Illinois, like most states, still celebrates Columbus Day with big parades (like the one in Chicago). But the Land of Lincoln also celebrates American Indian Day on Sept. 1. A national Native American Heritage Day unofficially takes place on the fourth Friday in September, while a bill before the President strives to mark an official nationwide celebration the day after Thanksgiving.

Celebrating Columbuss discovery of the Americas has long been debated for a myriad of reasons, the most obvious being a discovery to whom? Its hard to claim discovery of a land where a culture already exists. But even when you turn the discovery issue into the first European to set foot on the Americas, that distinction goes to Norse explorer Leif Ericson who sailed to North America nearly 500 years before Columbus. (Leif Ericson Day, by the way, was last Friday, Oct. 9.)

So maybe there arent any Native American celebrations happening in Chicago today, but stick the following on your calendar, from the American Indian Center of Chicago:

What: 56th Annual Powwow
Details: The Midwests largest gathering of Native Americans with singers and dancers; includes more than 40 arts and crafts and food vendors.
When: Nov. 7-8, 2009 (doors open at noon on Saturday, 10 a.m. on Sunday)
Where: UIC Pavilion, 1150 W. Harrison St., Chicago
