Road from Toronto to a cottage in Muskoka takes hours. Before you start your summer Algonquin hike, you spend three to five hours driving there. Ottawa, Montreal, Bay of Fundy - we often choose to go there by car. Hours and hours of highway boredom. Elder kids just take their ipods and books and plunge into silent meditation. But the younger ones need much more of your parental attention. If they start to whine or cry, you can not switch them off like a radio. To keep them happy and silent, you must pack well before you go.

While your bottom is traveling on pillows, your baby may be fixed tightly in a plastic basin slightly layered with foam and fabric. Choosing a car seat for the little ones, keep that in mind, if you plan long trips.
Snacks and drinks
Take what they love in little portions. Before you go, wash fruits, peel, cut and pack in small containers. Crying toddler will not wait when you finish, prepare in advance to react quickly. Stuff it with drinks into a cooler bag and distribute when needed.
Motion sickness medicine
You never know when that would happen for the first time, but even the toughest child may feel sick one day.
Arts and crafts
Drawing may keep a child busy and silent for a while. There are all sorts of traveling creativity kits on the market for kids of all ages, from doodle pads to easels, from coloring to writing. Choose the one that fits comfortable on your child's lap and does not stuck between the car seat sides.

Little kids love toys, and among all toys, they prefer new toys. Pack with a couple of their favorite and add there two or three simple treats from a dollar store just to surprise.

Mind the road safety, let your teenagers keep their music in their own headsets. The nursery rimes for the little ones are much easier to digest, you even may sing along together.

If your car is not equipped with video system, there are portable DVD players, laptops, iphones and various other compact media players.
Digital games
PSP or DS, they may be loaded with games for ages 3 to 100. Many of them are true brain boosters, others are just for fun.
