Although a good number of people in Kampala, Uganda speak a decent amount of English, the interpretation of the intention of those words seems to get bogged down by the process of cross-cultural translation. For example, if you are at a marketplace that is fortunate enough to have stalls, the vendors will greet you as you enter with "you're welcome," which is in fact meant as "you are welcome here, please enter," but of course can be quite confusing at first, as it isn't preceded by a "thank you" or even a precedent encounter of any kind. The important to budget travel is to approach in front. When it comes along to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new spots we have never been before, the actuality of cost and budgeting is generally in the back of our mind. Preparation and consuming our travel budget correctly is a consideration for most families. Lowering spending and prices, while still experiencing your vacation to its fullest, is the key to confirmed success and fiscal obligation. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The reasoning behind protecting money while travelling is simple: Even if your personal budget is highly limited, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also thinking about that while traveling, regardless of whether on a price range or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a big vacation or travel costs!. Another phrase that can cause problems at times is "it's ok". For example, when inviting a Ugandan to eat lunch with you, they may respond "it's ok". Of course, as Americans you would probably interpret that to mean, "no thanks", when instead they would be saying "yes, it's ok I'll go". Now, these misinterpretations pale in comparison to a recent string of events involving a housekeeper I had in Uganda. On the day I moved in to my apartment, the landlord had the place cleaned by a guy he has known for some time named Kenneth. He also told said that Kenneth would be coming by to clean once a week, and for additional pay also do our laundry if desired. Kenneth was a friendly and nice, and so one of the housemates befriended him and offered him dinner since there were leftovers. Unbeknown to us, this normal enough gesture in American culture translated as much more, to the point where Kenneth took up a semi-permanent residence in the apartment for a day and a half (including sleeping, showering, watching TV, and drinking the juice, without asking permission). At one point, he was reading one of the housemates' Bibles and commented that he would like to have it. The American housemate responded with a confused clarifying question-"I'm sorry, did you say you wanted my Bible?"- to which Kenneth replied, "Why yes, that is the nicest gift anyone has ever given me. Thank you", and then proceeded to write his name in the Bible. Needless to say, when Kenneth finally left, it was decided that the housework could be done by the roommates instead.
