You've probably seen the ads while sitting in BART or waiting for the bus. On January 20, Virgin America will begin direct service from San Francisco to Cancun. To celebrate the new route, Virgin is offering fares starting at $149 each way. To get this great fare, fly January 14 through May 11 with 14-day advance purchase.
I found this fare for several dates. For San Francisco to Cancun departing Monday morning, February 28 and returning Thursday late afternoon, March 3, the total fare for a direct ticket for one person came out to be $396.95. For the same dates, the lowest fare found with other airlines was $361 total with one layover each way.
While Cancun is full of luxury all-inclusive resorts perfect for those who simply want to lounge around the pool or on the sand, there's also plenty of cultural activities and historical sites if you want to actually experience a bit of the local culture. If you can, try to visit Cancun the week preceding Ash Wednesday (March 2 - March 9) for Carnaval. The nearby island of Cozumel, which you can get to by plane from Cancun or ferry from Playa del Carmen, puts on the most popular Carnaval celebration. Explore the tiny island with only one town by rented bicycle or golf cart. While Playa del Carmen is experiencing explosive growth, it still has some of the small-town charm that originally drew visitors away from Cancun. Stroll along 5th Avenue, Playa's main tourist thoroughfare, for restaurants, shops and live entertainment. Within Playa del Carmen is the ecological theme park Xcaret, where families can swim in underground rivers, take a walk on a tropical jungle trail and see jaguars.
From Cancun, don't miss the opportunity to see the Mayan archeological sites of Tulum, Chichen Itza and Coba. Numerous tour operators bus tourists from Cancun to the Mayan ruins every day.
