Looking for good, old-fashioned fun and sun this summer? Just because the economy is in the toilet doesnt mean you have to flush your familys summer adventures. Ferris wheels, funnel cakes, and free stuff await you just a couple little hours away from Los Angeles in the seaside town of Del Mar. Home to San Diegos annual San Diego County Fair (known to locals by its former name, the Del Mar Fair), this summer staple has been a favorite of everyone from locals to A-List celebrities since its inception in 1880.
With its salty ocean air, sweet aroma of deep-fried Twinkies and barbequed brisket, cries of hog-calling competitors and cacophony of seagulls, this fair offers oceans of fun.
Located at the Del Mar Fairgrounds (home also to a world-famous horseracing track) and just off the 5 South freeway, you can't miss it with its iconic Ferris wheel and ocean backdrop.
This years theme, Taste The Fun, promises tasty treats galore withculinary competitions for fair-goers young and young-at-heart, and cooking demonstrations with world-class chefs. Also featured: the fair's Tour of Tastes exhibit complete with interactive features including Candy Isle, From Our Field to Your Face, Slow Food, California's unique crops, a list of local Farmer's Markets, and Your Favorite Comfort Food
Of course no one can overlook the farm animals, rides, games, but the main attraction truly is...more food! The fair's got new fare this year for everyone, including: veggie kabobs, buffalo chicken fry bread, sweet potato fry dogs, deep fried Klondike bars, deep fried butter, and ice cream s'mores. Their "biggest" hit this year, however, could be their four-pound Belly Buster Burger: an 11-inch wide burger with 10 slices of cheese, eight slices of tomatoes, half a head of lettuce, 30-plus slices of dill pickles, and five ounce of burger sauce. Other traditional fare is still there, too, including fresh corn on the cob, funnel cake, cotton candy, cheese fries, barbequed meat, and more mouthwatering deliciousness - the fair has niblets for even the pickiest eaters. One definite hit: the fair's World Famous cinnamon rolls - big enough to share, but so tasty you'll probably want your own (just follow your nose to the food area you cant miss the scent of warm, sweet cinammon wafting through the aisles).
The frugal fair-goer will be happy to know the fairs website has all kinds of freebies, including free parking, free days, and more, including Kids Days where kids ages 12 and younger get in for free, and good readers ages 12 and younger get in for free with their reading certificate. Save a few dollars by packing a lunch (the fair allows moms homemade sandwiches!) and use your funds to share your favorite funnel cake. The fair also offers $2 Tasting Tuesdays and more.
