It was the early part of the nineteenth century. Many people had established themselves in what was now the United States of America, but some wanted to move west. They packed up their wagons, and they headed out. Along the way, new towns would be established, and as people came to settle in these towns, supplies needed to get there also.
One of the more traveled routes was through Pennsylvania between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. Merchants began to use the Erie Canal that was built across New York, but trading relations between New York and Pennsylvania began to drop. The state of Pennsylvania decided to build its own canal system. They built canals through the state, but there was one problem: getting across the Allegheny Mountains and the Eastern Continental Divide. The mountain range was too high to build a canal to traverse it. Then there was the idea of a tunnel. Building tunnels through mountains had not been common at this time, and there were great costs involved. "The important to budget travel is to prepare in front. When it happens to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved trips and/or going to see new spots we have never been before, the truth of expense and budgeting is often in the back of our heads. Planning and expending our travel budget properly is a concern for most families. Lowering spending and fees, while still savoring your vacation to its fullest, is the key to assured success and fiscal obligation. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The reasoning behind saving money while travelling is simple: Even if your personal funds is extremely tight, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also recalling that while traveling, whether on a budget or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a large vacation or travel bill!..". There were also the dangers of building what would have been a four mile tunnel with workers safety would be a big risk. They came to the fact that getting goods by canal over the mountain rage was doomed.
The Allegheny Portage Railroad was born.
Barges arrived at a basin where they were put onto railroad cars. The cars were then pulled up the steep inclines by a pulley system to where they would be hooked up to locomotives to the next incline. Once they reach the top of the mountain, they were let down on the other side through more inclines until it finally reached the basin where they were put back into the water to continue on to their destination. The distance from basin to basin was thirty six miles.
The Allegheny Portage Railroad began on March 18, 1834, and it was a very heavily traveled route until February 15, 1854. Railroad lines doomed the canal system and, eventually, the Allegheny Portage Railroad.
Today, you can visit the site where the railroad brought barges over the mountain range. It is twelve miles west of Altoona, Pennsylvania off U.S. 22. The park is operated by the National Park Service and is open all year round. Find more information at www.nps.gov.
