From the vantage point of an incurable traveler, the airline industry seems to have been taken over by a sadistic game of one-upmanship in the past few yearsat travelers' expense. For those of you who balked at the idea of charging for even the most meager snacks, wailed at charges for a second checked bag and gnashed teeth when the charges for a first bag were unveiled, get ready to rend your garments if this next idea goes through. Michael O'Leary, the CEO of Ryanair, a popular, Ireland-based low-cost carrier, told the BBC he'd been mulling the idea of installing coin slots on the bathroom doors of his company's planes.

O'Leary says that the pay-to-pee idea is about lowering costs in the long termtaking advantage of the call of nature, would bring in more revenues which ostensibly would later come back to passengers in the form of low fares. And what if you don't have change? Well, O'Leary says that he can't imagine anyone not having it. I say you should hope that you're surrounded by generous neighbors in the case of an emergency.

Luckily, there aren't any immediate plans to implement the concept. Nobody is in the dark about the perils businesses are facing in the current economic cloud that is wrapped around the globe, but to charge for things that are rather beyond any person's control seems callously opportunistic. Ryanair also charges passengers who check-in at terminals, rather than checking in for free onlinea service unavailable to those without EU or EEA (European Economic Area) passports or IDs (that means us, fellow Americans), and a small laundry list of others. Passengers who are, blind, deaf, have limited mobility or who are traveling with an infant can get a refund for what they are charged.

It remains to be seen where charging for displeasure will end in the world of air travel, but get your toilet use while you still can.
