A visit to the real Jersey Shore

These days, reality TV fans (and even those who aren't) have a limited view of our country's Garden State. Stereotypical characters with strange nicknames who spend their days drowning in contrived drama make for a sad depiction of New Jersey as a travel destination. But, those in the know will give you an accurate picture of a convenient, affordable vacation with a surprising variety of activities and easy side trips.

For some, memories of the Jersey Shore include lazy summer days at Seaside Heights or Cape May, amusement park fun at Wildwood, pulled taffy on Atlantic City's pre-gaming Boardwalk, or a yet-unknown Springsteen playing dives in Asbury Park. Of course, some of those memories are still today's reality. But, there's so much more -- truly something for everyone in this often unfairly maligned east coast hot spot.

For gamblers, there's almost no limit to Atlantic City's casino action, from low- to mid-scale, right on up to the five-star Taj Mahal and Trump Plaza. Average summer weekday rates for some hotels run as low as $89 per night. The famous seven-mile Boardwalk, the annual Miss America Pageant, and the street names copied by the makers of Monopoly, are just some of the attractions of this historic city.

Quieter spots for fishing and relaxing include towns like Belmar and Bayhead, while Victorian homes converted into bed-and-breakfasts make Cape May one of Jersey's coziest getaways.

If you're spending a week vacationing in this one-of-a-kind destination, you're less than 100 miles from a weekend in New York or a tour of historic Philadelphia. And, if you're traveling from Albuquerque, Southwest Airlines will fly you to Philly for as little as $278 roundtrip.

The Jersey Shore is not the stuff of Snooki or The Situation. It is, still today, a families', couples', or even singles' destination that is hard to beat in this or any economy. That's the reality of it.
