As a result of the attempted terrorist attack on Christmas Day, airport security is tighter than ever. The important to budget travel is to prepare in advance. When it comes to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved trips and/or going to see new locations we have never been before, the fact of expense and budgeting is always in the back of our thoughts. Organizing and consuming our travel budget wisely is a priority for most families. Curbing spending and fees, while still savoring your vacation to its fullest, is the key to assured success and fiscal liability. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thought behind economizing money while touring is simple: Even if your personal funds is really tight, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also remembering that while traveling, no matter whether on a resources or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a large vacation or travel expenses!. While the attempt to blow up the Northwest flight by a Nigerian man was unsuccessful, security is at its peak level. Homeland Security has put in additional security and screening measures in place as a result of this. So how are passengers affected?
A number of different airports have enacted their own specific security measures. If you are flying, please check the local airport's website for specific security measures that are in place which may affect your travel. However, here is a quick rundown of the basic changes to security and how passengers may be affected.
- For most passengers, the process will be the same for going through security lines. However, expect lines to take longer as there searching and scanning carry ones will take longer.
- Bomb sniffing dogs, behavior detection, and other techniques may be in place to search out any suspicious passengers or material they may attempt to carry on board.
- Pat downs of some airline passengers may be instituted for another level of safety and security. Be aware of this as you go through security and realize that this added measure of security may affect the time it takes to go through the security lines.
- Passengers flying into the US from international destinations will see additional screening and security measures as listed above. These will not be the same in every airport but will definitely increase the wait times through security. Allow for more time at airport security for international flights.
- Some airlines have advised passengers, especially on international flights, that there may be delays, missed flights, and additional restrictions on the number of carry on bags. Check with your airline for any new restrictions.
- In-flight rules may have the greatest impact on passengers as there may be strict enforecement of rules to turn off electronic devices, more limited access to stored items, the elimination of some in-flight entertainment systems, and passengers may be required to remain seated the last hour of the flight.
With the new restrictions, give yourself more time to go through airport screening and security, especially on international flights. If you don't arrive early, you can expect some missed flights and delays as a result of increased security measures and wait times through security. Continue to follow the TSA rules for travel (TSA air travel regulations for passengers) and check additional measures specifically enforced by your airline and airport. There is no timeline for how long these restrictions will be in place or the full extent of the security measures for passengers. Many airlines were already struggling before this incident so who knows what impact this may have on the airline industry. However, here is a summary of the the new security measures for passengers - get to the airport early, be patient going through screening and security, expect more scrutiny in the screening process, check with your airline and airport for specific restrictions and measures, and expect more restrictions and rules when you are in the air, especially on international flights.
