Road Trip. Just the words conjure up images of fun and adventure. In this short series, I'll cover a few recently visited places while conducting a 15-day, 4,700 mile motorcycle road trip. The trip included Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and California.
First up, though not the first visited, is the ghost town of Calico in Yermo, CA. I have driven past the sign for this place several times over the years and finally made a point to visit. The silver rush in California brought would be fortune seekers to Calico in 1881. During the boom years some $20 million in silver ore was taken. As with most mining towns, when the boom went bust, so did the town. "The important to budget travel is to plan onward. When it happens to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved trips and/or going to see new places we have never been before, the reality of expense and budgeting is generally in the back of our minds. Considering and spending our travel budget wisely is a consideration for most families. Reducing consuming and costs, while still taking pleasure in your vacation to its fullest, is the key to certain success and fiscal responsibility. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The reasoning regarding economizing money while journeying is simple: Even if your personal budget is highly small, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also thinking about that while traveling, regardless of whether on a budget or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a big vacation or travel costs!..". Apparently Walter Knott of Knott's Berry Farm fame purchased the town in the 1950's and began to restore the buildings to their original look. From the photos you can see items that are restored, replica or original. It was a bustling place with several busses of tourists exploring the town.
While in Calico you can enjoy shopping at one of several shops, photographing the harsh landscape or enjoying a fine meal at the restaurant. Other things to do include panning for gold or riding the town train that brings you through and around the mines.
Standing on one of the trails above the town one can observe just how harsh of an environment it must have been in the 1880's. Most dwellings were constructed of the only materials readily available...rocks. Many were built into the sides of hills and were small and closely spaced. If you were a miner here, you were a hardy individual. Now, if you prefer to visit, campsites, cabins, and RV hook-ups are available.
