One of the best things about Minneapolis is its diverse neighborhoodseach has its own inimitable character, as well as great activities and independent restaurants.

In Powderhorn: May Day Parade and the Midtown Global Marketthis weekend only!

Do: One of our city's most distinctive festivals, May Day, is happening this Sunday, May 3, and for its sheer artistry, it shouldn't be missed. The parade of giant papier mache puppets, politically-themed floats, raucous music and lots of little kids, who relish the opportunity to wear lots of glitter, starts from its home base at In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre (1500 E. Lake St.) and ambles its way down Bloomington Avenue toward Powderhorn Park, where the festival itself takes place. It is probably the best people-watching opportunity outside of the Minnesota State Fair, and there is always an air of fun, friendliness and camaraderie. This year's theme celebrates Earth as "Our Common Treasury."

Dine: There are food vendors down in Powderhorn Park, but since the parade doesn't get underway until 1 p.m. (and that's usually an optimistic estimate), don't miss the chance to explore the Midtown Global Market (920 E. Lake St.). It's a microcosm of Minneapolis' many cultures, and you can get a taste of them all (or as many as your stomach will hold) for great prices. Give yourself some time to peruse before making up your mind, and by all means, mix and match to your heart's content. Maybe you want some Scandinavian fish snacks (from Cafe Finspang), followed up with gyros (from Holy Land), chased with Mexican horchata (from Taqueria Los Ocampo, rice milk with cinnamon, highly addictive), and Italian ice for dessert? Whatever combos you can dream up, go for itthere's not a bad apple in this bunch. Park in the ramp at 10th and Lake; be sure have your ticket validated by one of the vendorsthat'll let you park in the ramp for up to three hours for free.

In Longfellow: Riverview Theater and Riverview Wine Bar
Do: In a leafy, unpretentious part of the city, you might expect low-key-but-smart venues. You'd be right, but you might not expect to find some of the best deals anywhere in the city. It's not too much of a stretch to say that the Riverview Theater (3800 42nd Ave. S.) is the best place to see movies in the Twin Cities. How does it earn that claim? By offering a nicely edited selection of second-run movies, including everything from blockbuster, no-brains summer pleasures to high-brow Oscar contenders (and winners)at $3 per person ($2 on Tuesdays). The theater is comfortable, with its modern stadium seating, and pretty, with its historic art deco decor. Even snacks are a steala tub of the best popcorn in the city (real butter, peopleit makes a difference) and a great big soda are yours for $5, and it's plenty for a couple to split.
Dine: Just kitty-corner across the street is the Riverview Wine Bar, (3745 42nd Ave. S.) which serves light fare like salads and crispy little flatbread pizzas. They do their food well, but the real star here is the fun of its wine flites, which ring in at about $10. The flites feature four wines, grouped by provenance or common characteristicsor by your whim, on Wednesday's Flite Nights. They also have a fantastic beer list, with an international cast of characters, almost universally from small(ish) scale operations. Whether you stop in before your movie or after, it's guaranteed to pleasesummer nights are especially enjoyable on their patio.

In Uptown: Boat rental and Tin Fish at Lake Calhoun
Do: Even if you're utterly over the thought of Uptown, repelled by its ironic facial hair and leggings-for-pants crowd, Lake Calhoun still has an undeniable pull. That's pretty clear on any warm and sunny day, when the trails that ring the lake teem with walkers, joggers, rollerbladers and bike riders. But you're not limited to just looping around on the blacktoprent yourself a vessel at Wheel Fun Rentals in the Lake Calhoun pavilion (3000 Calhoun Pkwy. E.) to get closer to the water. They've got canoes, kayaks (single and double) and my personal favorite, pedal boats (for two or four people). Prices are hourly and run from $11 (for a single kayak) up to $21 (for a double pedal boat).
Dine: When you return your boat, you can stay right in the pavilion and head for The Tin Fish. There's an extensive menu featuring, not surprisingly, fish (and their shellfish brethren) of all stripes. Some truly great deals can be had on the restaurant's fish tacos, which are mostly between $3.95 and $4.95, with a couple of fancy fishes fetching higher prices ($6.95 for haddock, scallops; $9.95 for halibut). Whatever you choose, you'll have delicious treats and a great view of the lake.

In Whittier: The Minneapolis Institute of Art and Jasmine Deli
Do: We Minneapolitans have a serious gem on our collective hands in the Minneapolis Institute of Art (2400 3rd Ave. S.). It's so wonderful, so packed with treasures, so much better than so many other museums in the country, that you kind of feel like you're getting away with something unsavory when you get in for free. (If you're the guilty type, like me, you'll either pay to get into a featured exhibit or just go full boar and become a member.) It's so big that you can divide it into multiple visits, and you'd be well advised to grab a map, if you're unfamiliar with the institution, and plot out the areas that sound most interesting to you. If you're not a chronic planner with a need to create themes, you can just stroll in the cool halls and marvel at artworks big and small, ancient and modern.
Dine: Just a couple of blocks away is one of the Minneapolis' best pocket-sized restaurants, Jasmine Deli (2532 Nicollet Ave.). We're a town that has no dearth of good Vietnamese restaurants, and even so, this one stands out. If it's cold and nasty outside, order the chicken soup, but in the warm glow of spring and summer, opt for banh mi (baguette sandwiches) or bun (noodle salads). The charbroiled beef or pork incarnations of either dish are so good that they have been known to elicit profanity, and cost from about $4-$7. Pair it with a Vietnamese iced coffee or a bubble tea, and you've got a meal that's more delicious than its price tag would have you believe.
