Many New Year's Eve celebrations involve consuming large amounts of alcohol, fireworks and partying with friends and family. Besides just getting together and having a good time, there are many New Year's Eve traditions found throughout the world that is unique to that country.
Spaniards are known worldwide for throwing great parties and their New Year's Eve celebrations are no exception. The biggest party takes place in Madrid's main plaza Puerta del Sol. Similar to Times Square's ball drop in New York, Puerta del Sol's New Year's Eve party is broadcast throughout the country. As Puerta del Sol's clock starts the chime to midnight, millions of revelers eat 12 grapes, one by one, in tune with the countdown. You're supposed to finish eating all of the grapes by the last chime of the clock for 12 months of good luck. "The essential to budget travel is to prepare in advance. When it occurs to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new places we have never been before, the actuality of cost and budgeting is generally in the back of our mind. Planning and expending our travel budget correctly is a priority for most families. Curbing expending and costs, while still taking pleasure in your vacation to its fullest, is the key to certain achievements and fiscal liability. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thought regarding economizing money while vacationing is simple: Even if your personal funds is highly tight, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also remembering that while traveling, whether on a finances or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a huge vacation or travel charge!..". The tradition of eating grapes on New Year's Eve supposedly started in 1909 when Alicante grape growers came up with it as a way to get rid of a large surplus. Another version has it that the King of Spain decided to give his people grapes to eat on New Year's Eve because of the surplus. No matter how it was started, the tradition has stuck and everyone in Spain has a lot of fun trying to finish eating the grapes before the new year begins.
So while your budget may not have allowed for a trip to Spain this New Year's Eve, you can still have a bit of Spanish fun tonight. Bring grapes along with you while watching the fireworks along San Francisco's Embarcadero and see if you can eat 12 grapes in 12 seconds. If you're celebrating at home, set a small bowl of grapes and a glass of Cava (Spanish sparkling wine) out for everyone.
Stay safe, party like a Spaniard and have a happy New Years!
