Whether you live in or plan to travel to Alabama, you'll want to visit the quad cities of Muscle Shoals, Sheffield, Tuscumbia, and Florence which cover portions of Colbert and Lauderdale Counties in northwest corner of the state. Spend a week or a weekend theres a ton of stuff to see and do. Here are a few suggestions:
One of the best bargains in the entire state is the $8 price for a ticket to see The Miracle Worker, an outdoor play performed at 8pm every Friday and Saturday night now through July 9 at Ivy Green, Helen Kellers birthplace in Tuscumbia. The ticket not only covers the play, but gives you bonus savings by allowing you free 6:45pm same-day admission to tour the grounds and home. The Helen Keller Festival takes place June 23-26 with live music, a huge classic car show, and much more.
Spring Park in Tuscumbia is gorgeous, with a sizable lake, lovely waterfall, and a huge 51-jet dancing fountain that, every evening except Mondays and Tuesdays, performs to a light and music show all free. Theres live music every Thursday throughout the summer during their upscale Farmers Market. The park also has a great playground, along with a kid-sized amusement park with a carousel, a train, and a not-too-scary roller coaster unlimited ride wristbands are only $6 for kids under 18 and $7 for 18 and older.
The Alabama Music Hall of Fame is enormous and packed with memorabilia from all of Alabamas famous artists like Nat King Cole, the Speer Family, Emmy Lou Harris, Taylor Hicks, and hundreds more. Displays include many of the artists who came to neighboring Muscle Shoals to get that world-famous Muscle Shoals sound into their recordings: The Rolling Stones, Cher, and countless others. Admission is $8 for adults; $7 for seniors & students 13-18; $5 for children; and under 6, free. Visit their website to print a $2 off coupon on admission.
If you loved the movie Sweet Home Alabama, youll have to drive out to Cherokee to the Coondog Cemetery the very one shown in the movie. A hop over to Sheffield and you can visit beautiful Riverfront Park with fishing piers along its mile of shoreline; a fabulous playground; and more - all free. In Muscle Shoals youll find Fame Recording Studios where the Muscle Shoals sound craze had its beginnings and artists like Aretha Franklin, the Osmonds, Tom Jones, and Wilson Pickett cut their albums. LaGrange College Site & Pioneer Settlement just outside of Muscle Shoals in Leighton is a free park highlighting Alabamas first college as well as pioneer life on Lagrange Mountain.
Florence has plenty of sights, too, including the W.C. Handy Birthplace and Museum at 620 College Street. Handy, known as The Father of the Blues, penned many famous pieces of music, such as the Memphis Blues and the St. Louis Blues. July 22-31 the W. C. A favorite food spot is Franks Italian at 104 S. Main St., Tuscumbia, serving fabulous authentic Italian food reasonably priced, beautifully presented, and housed in a lovely turn-of-the-century setting with indoor and outdoor dining and frequent live music. (Ladies, its worth stopping in just to see the light fixture in the ladies restroom.) Franks is open for lunch Tues.-Sat. and dinner Thurs.-Sat. Phone: (256) 314-4407. Another fave is Swamp Johns with restaurants in both Muscle Shoals and Florence absolutely superb catfish and seafood.
Upcoming Fourth of July celebrations include all-day events at McFarland Park in Florence, wrapping up with a fireworks extravaganza. Sheffield hosts a 10am Walking Parade. The town of Cherokee will hold their Street Dance from 9am to 10pm, with live music, concessions, and fireworks.
There are plenty of accommodations around the area, but none compare with Florences Marriott Shoals Hotel and Spa (photo, top left) nestled alongside the Tennessee River with 200 rooms, a full service spa, indoor and outdoor pools, a fitness center, and much more.
