As fellow Examiner Philip Mo publicized, Virgin America is flying nonstop between San Francisco and Chicago beginning May 25. To celebrate the new service, Virgin America is offering tickets for as low as $99 each way if purchased by February 21 for travel by September 6, 2011. Once you've bagged your cheap ticket, take advantage of some of these festivals happening in Chicago this summer:
Throughout the summer
Ravinia Festival: Set in Highland Park, the Ravinia Festival is a treat for classical music lovers. Throughout the summer, critically acclaimed and internationally-famous artists perform under the stars to a rapt audience picnicking on the grass. The complete schedule will be released in March. Some of the confirmed acts so far are Lang Lang, Yo-Yo Ma and Jan Lisiecki. Even those who don't have much exposure to classical music will appreciate the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's performance of the score from "The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring" while the film plays in its entirety on video screens. Ticket prices for the various acts vary in price.
June
Taste of Chicago: This is the largest free music and food festival in the U.S. For ten days from June 24 through July 3, Grant Park along Lake Michigan is filled with the smells of more than 70 restaurants serving up their specialties. Blues band dominate the five performance stages.
July - August
Grant Park Music Festival: Another outdoor classical music festival but this time taking place in the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park (which is within Grant Park). Even better, this festival is free. Check back for 2011's lineup. Last year's schedule included a screening of BBC's "Planet Earth Live" while the Grant Park Orchestra performed the score.
September
Chicago Jazz Festival: The Chicago Jazz Festival is a Labor Day weekend tradition. On three stages in Grant Park, international as well as local jazz musicians perform side by side. Admission is free.
