About an hour east of Atlanta straight out I-20, you'll find the gorgeous little town of Madison, GA. It has a booming population of 5,000 and it's the seat of Morgan County. Celebrating its 201st birthday this year, this is the rarest of birds: when Sherman's army came marching through the South, he agreed not to burn this city since it was the home town of a Union-sympathizing senator. That rescue plus many years of tender loving care, maintenance, and restoration has kept, among many other historic structures, about 100 area antebellum homes in fabulous condition - enough so that Madison has the largest historic district in Georgia.

For car buffs, the gotta-see is Bruce Weiner's Microcar Museum, a vast collection of teeny tiny real live street legal cars. These vehicles were factory-made from right after WWII to around the late 1960's or early 1970's. Some are small enough to accommodate only one person; others claim to seat 3 or 4 people, but trust me - having seen them, they'd have to be some very teensy humans! From BMWs to strange makes like the Goggomobil, this place has to be seen to be believed. It's the largest collection of microcars in the world! Admission is only $5; check their website for times and dates closed in June/July.

If you're into antiquing, the place is loaded with huge and intimate antique shops. If B&Bs are your cup of tea, there are at least a half dozen around the area, from small to enormous. Larry and I stayed in the breathtakingly beautiful Madison Oaks Inn & Gardens, a 1905 Greek Revival mansion with four awesome guest rooms, all with private baths, and a fabulous full breakfast served in the formal dining room each morning. The key to budget travel is to prepare in advance. When it comes along to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new locations we have never been before, the truth of expense and budgeting is often in the back of our mind. Planning and spending our travel budget wisely is a priority for most families. Reducing expending and expenses, while still enjoying your vacation to its fullest, is the key to guaranteed achievement and fiscal obligation. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thought behind saving money while traveling is simple: Even if your personal budget is highly tight, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also recalling that while traveling, regardless of whether on a finances or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a large vacation or travel expenses!. Rates are $185-$250 and well worth splurging for.

The whole town is decked out in springtime finery right now, and there are events and attractions galore to give visitors and residents plenty of activities to choose from. The town is packed with good eatin' from Ye Olde Colonial Restaurant on the historic town square - a simple "meat 'n' three" cafeteria in an old bank building - to the upscale Town 220 featuring steak and seafood in a fantastically renovated old warehouse.

The Madison-Morgan Cultural Center is housed in one of the first graded schoolhouses ever built in the South. This whopping structure is red brick in Romanesque Revival style, complete with a gorgeous bell tower and the original school bell. Visitors get to ring the bell once they finish a tour of the center. Displays include local history and art, plus there's a complete replicated old school room sure to bring back memories for some folks! Admission is adults $3; seniors $2.50; students $2.

Only minutes up the road is the little town of Rutledge with its cute little strip of downtown shops and an actual train car that's been converted into an eatery. You'll pass through here en route to Hard Labor Creek State Park, a WPA-built park covering over 5,800 acres with two lakes; good fishing; a swim beach; cottages and campsites; over 20 miles of hiking and horseback riding trails; and even horse stalls for bring-your-own-horse visitors.

Over in Buckhead you'll find the Steffen Thomas Museum one of a very few single artist museums in existence.

That's barely a dent in the sights to be seen around Madison. Find out more at: www.MadisonGA.org or phone them at: (800) 709-7406.
