Memorial Day weekend will soon be upon us, so that means weekends at the lake, lots of sun and funand more time in the car. Now is the time to explore the wonders of travel without all of the miles and traffic; explore the city. Whether planning a weekend with the family or a weekend with the friends, both have one very important question in common: what are we going to do that we havent already done?
The weather is warming up (this is the Midwest, if you dont like the weather just wait a of couple hours, right?) so getting out of our winter hibernation hangouts (i.e. our homes) and back outdoors. One way to do this is to visit a beautiful city park and the great thing about city parks is their proximity to your neighborhood. Just a few of the many parks in the Minneapolis area include: Hyland Lake Park in Bloomington (http://www.threeriversparks.org/parks/hyland-lake-park.aspx), Centennial Lakes Park in Edina (http://www.centenniallakespark.com/), Theodore Wirth Park in Minneapolis (http://www.minneapolisparks.org/default.asp?PageID=4&parkid=255) and Como Park in St. Paul (http://www.comozooconservatory.org/).
Hyland Lake Park in the heart of Bloomington provides families and friends with an outing that includes disc golf, hiking, play areas, fishing, canoeing/kayaking, dog trails and much more. There is also the Richardson Nature Center where you can still keep your brain active in the summer months.
Centennial Lakes Park in Edina offers paddleboat rentals; fishing in the ponds, remote control sailboat races, a maze or you can feed your competitive side on the bent grass putting course or croquet and lawn bowling courts. You can also watch a variety of cultural performances in a 1,000-seat lakeside amphitheater.
Theodore Wirth Park in Minneapolis is located just west of downtown and includes a fishing pier and boat launch, a supervised beach, volleyball courts, a playground, picnic facilities, trails for walking, biking, off-road biking and an 18-hole golf course and an 18-hole disc golf course.
Como Park in St. Paul is home to the Como Zoo and Conservatory. The zoo itself features many animals, big and small with a large cat exhibit, primates, birds, African hoofed animals, a variety of aquatic life and an exceptional polar bear exhibit. The zoo and conservatory are free to the public, but suggested donations of $1 for children and $2 for adults.
