Looking for something to do this weekend that wont break the bank? The Getty Museum is always a great choice! You can spend a relaxing day taking in some really amazing artworks, or just lounging around outside and taking in the stunning views. And the best part? Its free! Well, except for parking which costs $10.00. But you do get to ride up in a fun little monorail type carso its kind of like youre getting a ride out of it. Sort of anyway.
This weekend (May 2nd and 3rd, 2009), you can find a celebration of short stories performed by some well known people. They do cost an admission fee, but promise to be quite worth it. More info can be found here: www.getty.edu/visit/events/selected_shorts_2009.html.
On Saturday May 2nd at 3:00pm there is the Unexpected Adventures Shorts Program. This includes a reading of shorts that all share the theme of difficult vacations and destinations that have gone slightly awry. These include Cary Grants Suit by Todd McEwen and will be read by James Cromwell, The Man Who Blew Away by Beryl Bainbridge and will be read by Joe Mantegna, and finally Which Is More Than I Can Say About Some People by Lorrie Moore and performed by Kate Burton. Tickets for this event are still available and run at $20.00 per adult, and $15.00 per student/senior.
Saturday May 2nd at 7:00pm includes the Getting Away Shorts Program. These stories explain the high and low goals when traveling as a quest. These include an excerpt from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson and being performed by Alec Baldwin, How Wang-Fo Was Saved by Marguerite Yourcenar and read by Fionnula Flanagan, and finally The Kugelmass Episode by Woody Allen and performed by Isaiah Sheffer. Unfortunately this series is currently sold out.
The final shorts program will be Sunday May 3rd at 3:00pm and is titled Uncharted Territories. This series involves three tales that happen to arrive in very unexpected places. The first is Disco Papa by Karen Russell and will be performed by Susanna Thompson, The First Time I Saw Paris by Joseph Wechsberg and will be performed by Rob Morrow, and finally The Mappist by Barry Lopez and read by Joa Spano. Tickets for this series are on sale now and go for $20.00 or $15.00 for students/seniors.
The Getty has so much more to discover which is why it is a perfect place to spend any Saturday or Sunday. Get out there and soak up some cultureand all for about the same as the price of a movie ticket!
