Balloon Fiesta: Albuquerque's crown jewel

At long last, the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta opens this weekend with the initial Dawn Patrol scheduled to go up at 5:45 a.m. on Saturday, October 2nd.

This isn't just a county fair, folks. Balloon Fiesta is New Mexico's premiere annual event, as well asone of our country's most unique,drawing thousands of visitors from around the world. First-timers and veterans alike gaze in awe as the first Mass Ascension takes flight, and the thrill ride continues for ten full days.

For the kids, there are 18 new Special Shapes balloons this year. And for their parents, new park-and-ride and other packages will be available. Although the Fiesta is no longer taking RV parking reservations as of this week, the bold and daring are welcome to drive up and, if spaces are available, they'll be allowed to park.

There are still lots of hotel specials offered around town and, for those interested in surrounding attractions such as strolling through Santa Fe galleries, boating at Elephant Butte, braving a tram ride (or even a balloon ride!), the Convention and Visitors' Bureau can point you in the right direction.
