The Winchester Mystery House ranks in the top 10 most haunted houses in all of America. Bizarre rooms include a window built into a floor, staircases that descend 7 steps and then rise up 11, secret passageways, spying peepholes, walkways leading to nowhere, and doors that open up to walls. The house has 2,000 doors and 10,000 windows; it is a labyrinth of Victorian craftsmanship. The mansion once belonged to a lady named Sarah Winchester who purchased the house shortly after losing her husband and daughter to a fatal disease. Its construction is a reflection of the widows madness.
Two year-round tours are offered: The Mansion Tour walks guests through the houses interior for $28, and the Grand Estate Tour adds a behind-the-scenes peek for $33 -- the Grand Estate Tour is an hour longer than the Mansion Tour for only $5 more. Skip the crowd and schedule before 10:30am or after 3:30pm and receive a $5 voucher for either the gift shop or the caf.
The Winchester fortune originated in the 1800s by the Winchester Rifle Company. Sarah Winchesters husband had invented the first repeating rifle. Mrs. Winchester was told that her familys tragedy was because of all the people that her husbands invention had killed, and that she was being haunted by evil spirits. As long as the weapons were in operation, Mrs. Winchester used the profits towards the mansions construction. She was a wealthy widow, earning approximately $1,000 a day; thats the equivalent of $12,000 today, all thanks to the her husbands rifle.
Mrs. Winchester held a nightly sance in order to contact her deceased family. Sometimes when inviting good spirits in, evil ones will follow. For this reason Mrs. Winchester never slept in the same bedroom two nights in a row. She wore a black veil at all times and if one of her servants accidentally saw her without it, they were immediately terminated. Several paranormal investigators have studied the house and concluded that various ghosts haunt the premises, including Mrs. Winchester herself.
The Mystery House welcomes guests for evening flashlight tours on every Friday the 13th and during the Halloween season. Walk through the garden courtyards and the haunted mansion underneath the moonlight for only $45 each. Child and senior discounts are available except on the flashlight tours.
