Metro beefs up bus routes to compensate for bridge closures on Inauguration Day

Getting into the city on Inauguration Day is going to be tricky, at best. The Secret Service and area transportation officials Wednesday announced the closure to personal traffic of all D.C.-bound bridges from Virginia. The unprecedented closure will affect all inbound lanes over the Potomac River from 2 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Inauguration Day. But buses, limousines, taxis and other authorized vehicles will be permitted to pass. Even passers-by will be affected. The Washington Post reported that transportation officials and police will send private vehicles on I-95 headed north toward the city and drivers inbound on I-66 onto the Beltway. Maryland has no planned road closures into the city. New York Avenue and the Sousa, Whitney Young and Benning Road bridges will all remain open on Inauguration Day.

The plan will also block off a large section of downtown Washington from 4 a.m. to 7 p.m. to help manage the expected large crowds.

Officials have defended the closings, saying the inconvenience was necessary to exercise caution. But Virginians are furious. U.S. Rep. James Moran (D-Va.) is among those.

"The Secret Service, they're insane. This is security on steroids. They are imposing major obstacles on people who have a right to be there for the inauguration," he told the Post.

To compensate for the road closures and predicted high traffic on Metrorail trains, the city will operate 23 special bus routes, running every 10 minutes, to shuttle people into the city. But most of the special corridors start in the District and Maryland. Only four begin in Virginia, the Post reported today.

Metro will sell a one-day inauguration bus pass for $5 to help out-of-town visitors who might not have exact change for the $1.35 one-way cash fare or an electronic SmarTrip card. Passengers can purchase the pass when they board, and it will be good for the entire day.
