Southwest Airlines is once again making waves from Minneapolis/St. Paul. Beginning August 15, the Dallas-based carrier will offer non-stop flights to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport from the Twin Cities. As it has done since arriving in here in March of 2009, Southwest is causing fares to plummetat the other carriers serving the routein order for them toremain competitive.
While Sun Country Airlines has flown the MSP/Phoenix route for many years at prices often below those of the major carriers, Minnesota's 'Home Town Airline' is very small and doesn't affect markets like Southwest usually does. In fact, Sun Country now serves Phoenix seasonally, since the point-to-point demand for Arizona getaways pretty much disappears from May through September.
Starting with two daily direct flights, one in the morning and another in mid-afternoon, there is little doubt that service from Southwest will only increase as the temperature drops in Minnesota. Not to be outdone, both Delta Air Lines which operates a major hub at Minneapolis/St. Paul, and US Airways (formed bya merger several years ago with America West Airlines)which has a similar setup in Phoenix, have matched Southwest's fares on their non-stop service between the two cities. Southwest also offers connections in Phoenix to dozens of other cities on its route system.
So, if you're contemplating a late summer or fall getaway and are unsure of where you'll find very affordable airfares, look no further than Phoenix from the Twin Cities. The key to budget travel is to prepare in front. When it comes to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new locations we have never been before, the fact of cost and budgeting is generally in the back of our minds. Planning and consuming our travel budget wisely is a consideration for most families. Lowering spending and prices, while still savoring your vacation to its fullest, is the key to certain achievements and fiscal responsibility. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thought regarding protecting money while vacationing is simple: Even if your personal budget is extremely tight, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Southwest has introductory fares starting at just $99 each way without the requirement for a round-trip purchase. Delta isn't viewing the new Southwest route kindly and has lowered its fares to as low as $197 round-trip. So far, US Airways has chosen to price itself higher, from $258 round-trip, but things are bound to change when the new flights begin.
Sun Country returns to the MSP/Phoenix market in September with $99 one-way fares, but will only be flying the route onceper dayand then just four days a week. Without a hub operation on either end or the funds to heavily promote the route like Southwest surely will, Sun Country will have the most difficultly filling its flights.
In order to get the lowest possible fare to Phoenix, book soon as fares will bump up as the weather deteriorates in Minnesota and the rest of the Upper Midwest. Also, keep your eyes open for special bonus miles offers if you are a member of SkyMiles with Delta or Rapid Rewards with Southwest. These are great airline tools as they 'duke it out' for market share.
