To hire an agent or not? Take this simple quiz to determine whether you should go it alone or call in the pros. There's no right or wrongjust different personalities and different travel styles.

  1. You're heading out to dinner with your significant other. Do you?
    a) Insist that they choose the restaurant, you'll like anything they pick out.
    b) Hope they enjoy the restaurant at which you've made reservations.
  2. You need a new table. Do you?
    a) Go to a carefully arranged furniture store and choose something that can be shipped to your door.
    b) Hit up IKEA, and then get to work interpreting those wordless assembly instructions.
  3. You're on the road and lost. The best thing to do would be to:
    a) stop at the first gas station you see to ask directions.
    b) keep going. There's no such thing as lostthere are just places you haven't been before.
  4. You're swamped at work, to the point where you've got to bring your projects home. But you've also got to plan a party. What do you do?
    a) Ask someone else to pitch in on the party planning. You've got to take care of your more serious obligations first, and things will be better if you divide and conquer.
    b) Do both as best you can. You might be tired, and there's a chance things won't get done exactly on time or as you hoped, but you'll try to make it happen.
  5. You're at an art museum, looking at paintings. You spend more time:
    a) reading the didactic cards. You want to know the context in which the piece was made to understand and appreciate it more fully.
    b) standing back from the painting. A quick glance at the didactics will help you put a name to the amazing image, but the shadow's playing on the subject's face are what you'll really remember.
  6. Which better describes your Web browser's bookmarks tab?
    a) Organized and fairly brief; you have a stable of sites that you check regularly and rely on for accurate information. You don't have all day to go chasing around on the Internet.
    b) Sometimes organized, sometimes not, but there are about 400 sites tucked away here and there, most of which you've visited at once or twice. They tend to get lost in the mix because you're always finding something new to look at.

If you answered mostly "a": Get on the horn and call an agent. They'll be able to help you narrow down your choices, take care of the gory details of transportation schedules and hotel reservations, and point out things that will appeal to your interests. Your time will be spent focusing on what you like best, and there's a lowered chance of unpleasant surprises. Your dollars are being carefully directed to ensure a satisfying trip.

If you answered mostly "b": Maybe you should get a guide book, maybe you should surf the Internet, or maybe you should just go. Whether you do any of those things will depend on how organized you like to be, but hiring a travel agent, for you, dulls the shine of adventure and will only make you feel constrained. You're out to learn by trial, and you can look back on bumpy rides with a laugh. You have a very specific idea of how things should be, and it's probable that you might think others can't share your vision. You'll take your chances and are willing to face your mistakeseven if they hit you in the pocketbook.

If you answered an even number of "a" and "b": You like doing your own thing, but you want to be knowledgeable and get a lot of value for what you spend on your trip. The essential to budget travel is to prepare ahead. When it occurs to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved trips and/or going to see new locations we have never been before, the fact of expense and budgeting is always in the back of our thoughts. Organizing and consuming our travel budget carefully is a main concern for most families. Curbing consuming and fees, while still delighting your vacation to its fullest, is the key to certain success and fiscal responsibility. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thinking regarding protecting money while vacationing is simple: Even if your personal finances is really limited, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also remembering that while traveling, regardless of whether on a finances or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a huge vacation or travel bill!. Either look for a travel agent who understands and respects your independent streak or punctuate your self-planned trip with some guided tours.
