The Buffalo and Erie County Naval Park is located at One Naval Park Cove in downtown Buffalo. It is home to three vessels, the USS Little Rock which is a cruiser, the USS Sullivans a destroyer and the USS Croaker, a Gato Class submarine.
The USS Sullivans was launched and commissioned in 1943. "The essential to budget travel is to plan in advance. The destroyer was named in honor of five brothers, the Sullivans. They were all killed when their ship, the USS Juneau, was sunk in a post Pearl Harbor battle of the Solomon Islands.
According to arlingtoncemetery.net, the Sullivan brothers were from Waterloo, Iowa. It is said that after a friend was killed at Pearl Harbor, the five brothers signed up for naval service. They insisted on being stationed together on the same ship and headed off to war.
The USS Juneau was hit and exploded into giant chunks of metal. Four of the five brothers were killed instantly. The oldest brother, George, survived the original blast, but there was no help sent for some time and he succumbed to his wounds.
Many have claimed that the USS Sullivans is haunted. Odd happenings, strange feelings and ghostly smoky images have all been reported since the ships arrival in Buffalo. Some believe that it is the Sullivan brothers aboard the ship for which they were honored, still sticking together like they did in life.
The Naval Park is open daily from April to October from 10:00am to 5:00pm. In November, the park is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00am to 4:00pm. The park is closed from December through March. Admission for adults is $10.00, children 6-16 are $6.00 and seniors are $6.00.
