From the outside, La Zona Rosa may be overlooked on a normal day. Its stucco foundation looks more like a pueblo than a music venue, and its name is modest, not flashy. At night, it is amazing to see the lines forming outside its doors and the building light up in red, as if a beacon to groupies and music lovers everywhere. This transformation is almost awe-inspiring, like the speakeasies that went undetected in daylight yet drew in throngs of people in search of a good time. La Zona Rosa, isnt your typical music scene. There are no assigned seats, no long lines, no ushers gliding their way among the aisles with their flashlights like the road police. The simplicity is what draws visitors and locals back for more. There is something almost laughable about the literalness of concert jargon. When they say doors open at 8 pm that is exactly what happens. They open the doors and if you have a ticket youre let in. When it says General Admission, thats precisely how to describe how ticket holders are simply let into the one big room, and mingle among themselves and the musicians. A bar in the front serves as both a refreshment center and souvenir shop, as whoever is performing that night is able to sell their T-Shirts, CDs, and other memorabilia. The wooden floors make it perfect for dancing, and there is no damage done if a drink happens to get tipped over. Fans can literally lean themselves on the edge of the stage, just feet from the musician theyve come to hear. If you prefer a little distance, there is no harm, no foul, as anywhere you stand is close enough to hear every word, see every face of the band. La Zona Rosa, is sort of like the independent cinema compared to the Tinseltowns and AMCs out there. They can only let so many people in because of capacitys sake, and they only choose certain performers to grace its stage. This is where to see the musicians before they make their big break before what we call in the south as Going Nashville, or Going Hollywood. And although, its a small bar, it draws in an eclectic sort of crowd. If you go to a Fall Out Boy gig youre likely to get tweens or students in their early 20s. Similarly, if you go to see Bonnie Rait, the audience will be mostly in the above 45 years range. This isnt the case though with the acts that draw a crowd to La Zona Rosa, and for that, musicians feel honored to play here, not as if its a hole in the wall. At a Train concert, there was a dad bringing his two daughters, there were college students who preferred to be there than at a football game, and couples that dotted the floor sipping on Bud Lights or Coronas. The fact is, people come here because it doesnt just play host to one type of person or one type of genre. You could easily find Jazz, Blues, Rock, and Alternative all within the same week. Junes calendar will give you a sample of what is typical La Zona Rosa style Black Widow Burlesque Troop, Robin Trower, The Followthrough, City Community Church, and Xavier Rudd. Other acts in the summer include Sugar Ray and Pete Yorn. This type of experience no big crowds, no intermissions and red velvet seats, no nosebleed seats this is why Austin is The Music Capital of the World it doesnt get much more up close and personal.
