There's nothing worse than getting sick when you're away from home. Unfortunately, there is no telling when we might get sick, and it even happens sometimes when we're on vacation. I've had this experience in both Mexico and Europe, and I was in desperate need of simple, yet familiar medication. Here is a list of simple things to pack that will make your life much easier in the event of an emergency.
Insurance Information - In the event of an illness, or accident, it is important to have your insurance information with you. While you may have to pay up front at the hospital you're visiting, you can also request the hospital send a copy of a bill to your insurance company for reimbursement. I had to visit a hospital in Berlin, and my insurance company was able to reimburse me for everything other than the cost of the equivalent of a co-pay. If you do forget your insurance card, don't forget to get original copies of receipts and documents and send them to your insurance company later.
Ibuprofen - This simple little addition to your first aid kit is a life saver. Hopefully, any medical issues on your trip will be limited to a headache or a muscle ache. Ibuprofen can treat these in a jiffy and it's nice to have it on hand, instead of running around a foreign country trying to figure out what the equivalent medication might be.
Band-aids and Neosporin- If you're anything like me, you bump and scratch yourself every time you go on an adventure. I like to climb, hike, run, bike, ski...you name it, if it's adventurous and sort of dangerous, I like it. I often end up with a minor cut that can be patched up real quick with a Band-aid and Neosporin.
Antacid - Trying a new cuisine is one of the best parts of traveling, but often it takes a while for your tummy to adjust to new flavors and spices. A great way to combat this is to pack away some familiar antacids. This will help you deal with any acid reflux, or heart burn before it gets to you.
Pepto-bismol - Along the same lines, if you try new food, and for whatever reason, it doesn't sit well with you, make sure to have some some medicine to combat Montezuma's Revenge. It will be extremely helpful.
Cold/flu medicine and vitamin enriched cough drops- Getting a cold on a vacation is a major bummer, but with the right medicine, you can at least curb the symptoms in order to enjoy your vacation. Make sure to bring a medication that has both a night and day formula.
Vitamins/Immune enhancer - A great way to avoid sickness is to continue to take your vitamins while on vacation. Also, consider bringing something loaded with vitamins that boost your immune system like Airborne or Emergen-C. This is a great way to prevent illness, and to heal quickly if you feel yourself starting to get sick.
Hopefully, anyone on any vacation will be 100% free of any harm or illness, but in the event of any illness, it's best to be prepared, rather than running around trying to make due with medications that are unfamiliar. "The key to budget travel is to prepare in front. When it comes to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new spots we have never been before, the fact of cost and budgeting is always in the back of our minds. Preparation and expending our travel budget carefully is a priority for most families. Minimizing spending and expenses, while still delighting your vacation to its fullest, is the key to confirmed accomplishment and fiscal obligation. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thought regarding saving money while travelling is simple: Even if your personal funds is really small, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also keeping in mind that while traveling, regardless of whether on a resources or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a large vacation or travel bill!..". Make sure to bring a simple first aid kit with you when you travel, as well as any of your prescription medications and vitamins. It will save you time, money, hassle and a head-ache.
