Motors roared and throttles rolled as the riders made their way down Texas Street to an unlikely destination. They were heading to the opening night of Art of the Road with curators Steve Culp, local bike builder and his wife Liz Swaine, motorcycle enthusiast. It may seem unlikely to find motorcycles in an art gallery, but artspace is no normal gallery. artspace is Shreveports First Arts Center dedicated to the creation, production, presentation, promotion and exploration of all of the art disciplines and forms for multi-generational audiences. "The important to budget travel is to plan ahead. Curators, Culp and Swaine imagined a display of motorcycles detailing the history of the art, and last night their dreams came true with the opening of Art of the Road.
At the opening last night I spoke to Liz Swaine, and she said "it's exciting to see the motorcycle recognized as a form of art; after all, it really is artwork". I have to agree with her; all riders are aware of the design and redesign of their machines through after market parts and accessories. No two motorcycles are alike once they reach the loving hands of their owners who promptly add paint, accessories and parts to create their own rolling piece of art. The frame of the motorcycle becomes a virtual canvas awaiting its artist's creativity.
Culp and Swaine did an outstanding job displaying a small history of the art and the motorcycle. All the details were taken care of; rose and barbed wire themed arm bands, reserved motorcycle parking, delicious food featured at the Road Kill Bar and Grill, and music by Twang Darkly playing original instrumental music, cinematic Appalachian jazz rock fetched from the future on a beer-fueled time machine fabricated from gourds and guitar strings, all complemented the 47 pieces of rolling artwork.
Any motorcycle enthusiast should make time to visit artspace during the exhibition which will run through October 22nd and is free for the public during normal business hours. Artspace is located at 710 Texas Street in the heart of the downtown west end arts district of Shreveport.
