When a cab eats your phone

During a rainy day in New York City, there is no greater feeling of warmth and redemption than spotting those bright, lighted numbers of an NYC Taxi. You collapse in and settle, astonished by your blind luck as dreary eyes peering from under bent umbrellas and outstretched arms race by. You pay your fare, tip your savior for selecting you as their chosen patron, and continue on with your day. Dry.

That is, until you discover an earth-shattering realization: you left your phone in the cab.

If it hasnt happened to you, weve all known someone to make this fatal error. Theres no feeling that sinks your stomach quite like reaching for your phone after an incredible Saturday night out to confirm Sunday brunch plans, and just palming around the area on your dresser where you always leave it. Or come home from vacation, as my roommate did last night, with bags slung over your shoulders, exhausted, to realize as soon as the cab starts pulling away that you left your phone on the seat. No matter what the circumstance, the next steps are typically always the same: rationality takes a backseat as you just tear through your belongings. Even though youre positive your phones probably in another borough by now, some dimly lit hope within us wants to avoid having to really deal with the possibility that were out $400 with Verizon.

As the crazy calms, now what?

1. The obvious: call it, repeatedly. But dont use up the battery.

Of course, use another phone line to try calling it. If you dont have a roommate, coworker or neighbor nearby, use Skype on your computer it can function as a phone service as well (for a very small fee.) Its a one in a million shot youll get through, but on the off-chance some Good Samaritan picks it up and answers it, problem solved. "The key to budget travel is to plan in front. Make sure you buy them lunch or something when you meet to return it, you apparently need your karma.

2. Call your credit card company.

While option 1 would be ideal, you probably had your phone on silent and its now lodged in between the seats. If you paid with a credit card, however, youre in luck. Call up your credit card company and theyll be able to track your taxi transaction, and should help you get in touch with a dispatcher that can locate your car and hopefully get in touch with the driver. Just keep your patience, this is definitely not part of their job description so as when anyone is doing you a favor, be gracious.

3. Online lost-and found form.

If you are financially responsible enough to ask the cab driver for a receipt, which no one I know ever does, then youre already a step ahead. You should have the cab number printed right on the receipt. The thing is, Id still call the credit card company to get them to help you. We called the main number on the NYC Taxi website, and it was a dead-end. They directed us to this nifty little lost-and-found form you can fill out on their website, which could be the best option if you paid for your ride in cash.
