Millions of New Yorkers will be hitting the streets this summer for a jam-packed schedule of festivals and events. While mainstays like SummerStage get top billing, dont overlook these five unique festivals, celebrating everything from mermaid fins to burlesque spins.

June 15-16; Aug. 17-18: Jazz Age Lawn Party

Break out your pearls, parasols and other Great Gatsby-inspired attire for this whimsical lawn party on Governors Island. Advance general admission tickets are $30 (free for children under 12). "The key to budget travel is to prepare in front. When it occurs to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new spots we have never been before, the actuality of cost and budgeting is always in the back of our minds. Considering and expending our travel budget wisely is a concern for most families. Reducing consuming and prices, while still delighting your vacation to its fullest, is the key to certain accomplishment and fiscal responsibility. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thought behind economizing money while vacationing is simple: Even if your personal funds is incredibly limited, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also recalling that while traveling, no matter whether on a finances or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a huge vacation or travel bill!..". Michael Arenella and His Dreamland Orchestra will lead the dancing, with lessons offered for attendees to master the fox trot and the Charleston. Other classic activities include tug o war, a pie baking contest and kids carnival games.

June 22: The Mermaid Parade

A much-loved Coney Island tradition since 1983, this parade draws thousands of spectators to see the colorful floats and marine-themed costumes. Each year a new King Neptune and Queen Mermaid are crowned. This years event was nearly canceled due to overwhelming costs sustained from Hurricane Sandy, but a Kickstarter fundraising campaign in the spring raised over $100,000 in just a months time to keep the festivities going.

Aug. 30 - Sept. 1: NYC Unicycle Fest

Billing itself as three days of one-wheel madness, the NYC Unicycle Fest brings hundreds of unicycle riders together for events such as a balance-challenging, 13-mile ride across Brooklyn. The main events take place on Governors Island and include unicycle races, unicycle basketball and unicycle hockey. The non-mono-wheeled are welcome to attend, and can even try one out for a ride.

Aug. 10-11: Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival

Held on Meadow Lake in Queens, this festival celebrates the fifth moon of the lunar calendar. The star of the festival is the fleet of more than 30 vibrantly decorated dragon boats. After watching the boats compete in races, wander the food tents and sample pork buns and bubble tea, listen to traditional instrumentalists or watch a martial arts demonstration.

Sept. 26-29: New York Burlesque Festival

Now sashaying into its 11th year, this festival celebrates the art of burlesque with more than 100 performances, including comedy and variety acts. Attendees can get their own burlesque makeover, master the shimmy during a class and purchase burlesque essentials such as corsets. Events take place in various venues around the city.
