The National Park Service offers an annual pass that allows travelers unlimited access to any of the national parks for one whole year for a flat fee of $80. "The key to budget travel is to plan in advance. When it happens to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new places we have never been before, the truth of expense and budgeting is always in the back of our thoughts. Preparation and consuming our travel budget properly is a consideration for most families. Minimizing spending and charges, while still taking pleasure in your vacation to its fullest, is the key to assured achievement and fiscal obligation. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thought regarding saving money while touring is simple: Even if your personal budget is incredibly tight, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also remembering that while traveling, regardless of whether on a finances or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a huge vacation or travel costs!..". This can be a fantastic deal for many enthusiasts who frequent the parks. Is it worth it though for you and your family? Lets break down the facts of the America the Beautiful pass!

Who It Includes:

In areas that are per a vehicle fee, it covers every person in your car

In areas that are per a person fee, it covers up to four adults and all children under 15.

You can sign up to two names on the back of the card. At least one of the signature holders must be in the car with a photo ID to use this pass. From my personal experience, the rangers will ask for ID about 50% of the time.

Where You Can Go:

The pass covers access fees to any site managed by the government agencies listed below. Click on each link for a list of parks.

Bureau of Land Management

Bureau of Reclamation

Fish and Wildlife Service

USDA Forest Service

National Park Service

The annual pass is valid for 12 months from the time of purchase, expiring on the last day of that month.

Is it Worth It?

This all depends on how often you will be visiting the parks within a span of one year. Fees to enter national parks vary between $10-$25 per vehicle. You can find the specific fees for the parks in your itinerary by visiting the nps.gov site. Generally, for families who plan on visiting the parks four or more times throughout the year, the annual pass is a good deal. Also, if you have a relative or close friend that can be the second signature on the card you can split the deal amongst two families, as long as at least one of signature-holders is traveling at that time.

How Can I Purchase One?

Annual passes can be purchased either in person at the park or ahead of time online here.

Also note that the National Park Service offers discounted lifetime passes for senior citizens over the age of 62 as well as free lifetime passes for citizens with disabilities or more than 500 volunteer hours with federal agencies.
