The past couple of weeks have been difficult for Brian Johnson and the CF Riders on their Nationwide Ride for Life to raise awareness about Cystic Fibrosis and funds to help families dealing with CF.
This portion of the story of this journey begins on April 27 the same day the devastating tornadoes hit the south and very near the home base for the CF Riders. The tornadoes not only provided added stress but also cut into the financial support the team was receiving from friends back home in Alabama.
The group did receive help for two Harley-Davidson dealers while in Arizona. Hacienda Harley-Davidson in Scottsdale provided some financial support in the form of rooms and meals and Harley-Davidson of Tucson helped with some service work. Kudos for all those independent motorcycle dealers across the country always willing to help out charities.
On the beauty of the ride, the CF Riders got to experience Sedona, Arizona, the Painted Desert, and the Grand Canyon. In Brians words, The [Grand] Canyon is breath-taking, words cannot express the splendor. From the Grand Canyon it was over the Hoover Dam and into Nevada.
While camping in the Redwoods, Brians health took a turn for the worse and he had to trailer his motorcycle for the first time. The dream of riding the entire 10 weeks was starting to fall apart.
The group did continue, however, to Monterey, California just in time for The Living Breath Foundation event, Surfing the Salty Seas. Australian surfers with Cystic Fibrosis discovered they could breathe easier after riding the waves. Scientists took a look and found that the moist salty ocean air really does improve the symptoms of CF by loosening the mucus in the lungs. Brian and Christie were guests of The Living Breath Foundation for this event. Little CF Rider Hayden even got to meet the pro surfers attending this event and got autographs from all of them. How cool is that?
Just north of the Bay Area the crew spent a couple of days with family. It was while here the decision was made to return to Alabama. Brians health was not improving even with the down time. The group is on the way home with hopes to be in Birmingham on Sunday, May 15 and on Monday Brian will check into the UAB hospital for what probably will be a two-week stay.

- Chic C For those perhaps that dont know, the word STORM is painted on the side of Brians chase RV. I saw this and felt that the way he has breathed has been a storm but it is his perseverance and love for his CF family that has gotten him through it. When Brian breathes, it is a breath at a time and he thanks God everyday for every breath. Do you thank God for your breath? Its something I think we take for granted.
